Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    Translation (NRSV):
    The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

    Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
    ἤκουσαν : aorist of ἀκούω hear, with genitive of person listen to.
    λαλοῦντος : participle of λαλέω speak.
    ἠκολούθησαν : aorist of ἀκολουθέω to follow or accompany someone who takes the lead, accompany, go along with.

      Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
      στραφείς : aorist passive participle of στρέφω turn ; in reflexive sense.
      θεασάμενος : aorist participle of θεάομαι behold, observe ; see
      ἀκολουθοῦντας : participle of ἀκολουθέω : follow.
      ζητέω : seek, want.
      ὁ δέ : in narration, and/but he.
      ῥαββί : Hebrew my lord, sir ; in Aramaic mode of address to a teacher (Hebrew, mode of address to a teacher master.
      λέγεται : passive, here means (Hebrew, lacking an equivalent, expresses the idea by is said, is called.
      μεθερμηνευόμενον : passive participle of μεθερμηνεύω (μετά- from one (language) to another + ἑρμηνεύω interpret) translate, ὃ λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον which, when translated, means.
      διδάσκαλε, : vocative of διδάσκαλος teacher, master.

          Translation (NRSV):
          Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
          Ἀνδρέας,-ου, ὁ : a Greek name Andrew ; a Jew Ἀ. also in Cass. Dio 68, 32, 2) Andrew, brother of Simon Peter; acc. to J 1:44 he was from Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee, and according to vss. 35, 40 was orig. a disciple of John the Baptist.
          Σίμων, -ωνος, ὁ : (שִׁמְעוֹןSimon.
          εἷς : one (of two) for ἕτερος (other of two 1. pertaining to being distinct from some other item implied or mentioned, "other" a. other of two, contrasting a definite person or thing with another)
          ἐκ : for partitive genitive.
          ἀκουσάντων : participle of ἀκούω hear.

                          ἦν : 3rd person singular of εἰμί be.
                          Βηθσαϊδά : Bethsaida = a place north of Lake Gennesaret (Jos., Ant. 18, 28), east of the Jordan, near where it empties into the lake.

                              εἶναι : infinitive of εἰμί be, exist.
                              ἔρχου : imperative of ἔρχομαι come.
                              ἴδε : aorist imperative of ὁράω, here treated as an exclamation like ἰδού prompter of attention, behold, look, see. Like הִנֵּה it sometimes serves to enliven a narrative.

                                Translation (NRSV):
                                Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
                                ἀληθῶς : (adjective ἀληθής) really, indeed.
                                δόλος : properly a "bait", hence deceit, ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν in whom guile does not exist ; ἔστι thus accented after οὐκ and καί, when beginning a sentence, and when meaning to exist.
