Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    Translation (WEB):
    Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
    κλῆμα : vine shoot, (flexible) branch.
    φέρον : neuter participle of φέρω ; conditional, οὐ φέρον not bearing (= if it does not bear).
    καθαίρω : cleanse ; prune.
    πλείων, -ονος : masculine and feminine πλεῖον neuter (comparative of πολύς) more.
    φέρῃ : subjunctive of φέρω bear.

      ἤδη ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε διὰ τὸν λόγον ὃν λελάληκα ὑμῖν

      Transliteration (Accordance):
      ēdē hymeis katharoi este dia ton logon hon lelalēka hymin

      Translation (WEB):
      You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

      Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
      ἤδη : already.
      καθαρός : clean, cf. Acts 15:9.
      ὁ λόγος : especially of the teaching of Jesus, technical term for the gospel.
      λελάληκα : perfect of λαλέω speak.

        μείνατε ἐν ἐμοί, κἀγὼ ἐν ὑμῖν. καθὼς τὸ κλῆμα οὐ δύναται καρπὸν φέρειν ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ ἐὰν μὴ μένῃ ἐν τῇ ἀμπέλῳ, οὕτως οὐδὲ ὑμεῖς ἐὰν μὴ ἐν ἐμοὶ μένητε

        Translation (NRSV):
        Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.

        Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
        μείνατε : aorist imperative of μένω abide.
        κἀγώ = καὶ ἐγώ.
        φέρειν : infinitive of φέρω bear.
        ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ : by itself.
        ἐὰν μὴ : unless ; (1st time) but only.

          μένων : participle of μένω remain.
          ἐν : sociative in special sense of intra-personal relationship: 6:56, "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him."
          χωρίς : with genitive without, apart from.

            ἐὰν μή τις μένῃ ἐν ἐμοί, ἐβλήθη ἔξω ὡς τὸ κλῆμα καὶ ἐξηράνθη καὶ συνάγουσιν αὐτὰ καὶ εἰς τὸ πῦρ βάλλουσιν καὶ καίεται.

            Transliteration (Accordance):
            ἐan mē tis menȩ̄ en emoi, eblēthē exō hōs to klēma kai exēranthē kai synagousin auta kai eis to pyr ballousin kai kaietai.

            Translation (ESV):
            If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

            ἐβλήθη : aorist passive of βάλλω throw; βάλλω ἔξω throw away.
            ἔξω : outside.
            ἐξηράνθη : aorist passive of ξηραίνω (ξηρός dry) dry up, passive intransitive wither ; proleptic aorists, sometimes called "dramatic" aorists meaning "he shall be thrown away."

              ῥήμα : what is spoken, word.
              ἐάν : (= ἄν) with subjunctive whatever, all that.
              θέλητε : subjunctive of θέλω wish to have, desire, want.
              αἰτήσασθε : aorist middle imperative of αἰτέω ask, ask for, demand.
              γενήσεται : future of γίνομαι happen, turn out, take place.
              ὑμῖν : pure dative, for you.

                My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

                ἐν τούτῳ : by this, referring to what follows, ἐν instrumental.
                ἐδοξάσθη : aorist passive of δοξάζω glorify.
                ἵνα : (namely), that, epexegetical (of ἐν τούτῳ).
                φέρητε : subjunctive of φέρω bear.
                γένησθε : aorist subjunctive of γίνομαι that you may prove to be.
                ἐμοί : dative, either to me or of mine.

                  ἠγάπησέν : aorist of ἀγαπάω, aorist possibly represents a Semitic perfect which, in the case of stative verbs (verbs denoting a state as opposed to an act), may refer equally to past and present.

                                ἐξελέξασθε : aorist of ἐκλέγομαι choose.
                                ἔθηκα : aorist of τίθημι appoint.
                                ὑμεῖς : perhaps redundant ; if emphatic, connoting disciples as appointed to the work hitherto done by Jesus.
                                ὑπάγητε : subjunctive of ὑπάγω go.
                                μένῃ : subjunctive of μένω remain, stay, abide, last.
                                ὅ τι ἂν : (with subjunctive) whatever
                                αἰτήσητε : aorist subjunctive ; αἰτέω (τινά τι) ask (one) for (something).
