Which brings up the obvious question -- has anyone died from sticking a key or fork into an electric socket? Has anyone ever tried to commit suicide that way?

When I was 3 or 4 I was playing "car" and stuck my mom's bobby pin into an outlet and got shocked. I actually still remember that.

You CAN die from it, it all depends on how well grounded you are, how low the resistance in your skin is (is your skin dry or damp), and whether the current passes through your heart on the way to the ground. Oh and the voltage. 220V would most likely kill you pretty quick.

FWIU the circuit breakers tend to cut it off too quickly.

I was probably six when I was pretending to unlock a secret door in my parent's bathroom by sticking a small key into a socket. Most definitely left my hand stinging and pissed off my father as well.

The circuit breaker will only cut off if the current exceeds the capacity of the breaker (15 or 20 amps normally.)

If there is a direct short to ground it will trip the breaker, but the current going through your body will kill you way before it trips the breaker. A few milliamps can stop your heart.

My father was a master electrician although it had nothing whatsoever to do with his job (low level executive for one of the Big Three automakers). Whenever he worked on a TV (pretty much one of his hobbies) he never would reach in with both hands. He said it prevented any shock from traveling up both arms to the heart.

Even when an old TV was unplugged it carried a massive charge for days.

Yeah I worked on old CRT TVs. They had a high voltage capacitor with a line running to the the CRT. You have to discharge it before working around it. It's around 20K volts (but low amperage so it likely wouldn't kill you). I forgot to do that once and brought my hand close to the capacitor while adjusting a screw on the frame. ZAP! a spark jumped from the capacitor to my thumb and through the screw driver. Dang that hurt. Felt like someone slammed my thumb with a hammer.

It's basically like being hit with a stun gun. But there is also the 120VAC in the chassis too and that can kill you, especially if like your dad said, it goes through your hands and your heart.

When I was young I was plugging in a small radio I had, and my fingers touched the prongs when it was going in to the extension cord. Needless to say that did not feel good. Even though it was only about a second it felt much, much longer.

Back in the 80s while traveling my gf at the time, we had reservations at a hotel but apparently the TV wasn't working in the room since when we entered it one of the hotel's "engineers" (maintaince men) had the back off the set and was working on it.

I notice that he had both of his hands reaching into the back of the set. I warned him that wasn't smart but he said it was unplugged. Just as I was about to tell him how the capacitor held a charge for days there was a flash and a loud pop and the guy was thrown back several feet landing hard between the beds.

He got up mumbled he was fine and left. With that my gf said, "Well I guess that means the TV is still broke."

She always had a way with words.
