  • Ben Carson Tells Lies. Big Deal.

Ben Carson's telling some weird lies. The most embarrassing lies are ones told while explicitly conveying the evil of lying. He comes from a tradition that puts too much emphasis on the malevolence of lying when the actual truth is we all do it and most often for non-malevolent reasons. We lie for convenience, to make a story funnier, to protect people, to not hurt their feelings ("no, you don't look fat in that dress." "That dinner was delicious). We also concoct lies to hurt others. Most don't, though. There are probably even lies in the bible. Exaggerations, definitely.

The one thing that Carson gifts us with is that truth. Christians and everyone else lie for the same reasons with the same frequency if you average it out. Plus, ALL politicians must lie, literally.

I'm more offended that the guy is so idiotic with respect to his views on evolution. This is what he should be continually shamed for, not lying.

So to clarify you are calling him a liar? Not mistaken, not ignorant, not having a different point of view but a liar? Also can you point out what lies you wish to identify, I don't actually know him so I don't know if he is a liar or not but it might help to actually list what you mean about what he is lying about and how you prove that he is indeed lying about it.

I came across a good quote on twitter today: "Yes, Ben Carson is a liar, but to be fair he also says lots of crazy irrational stuff that he sincerely believes is true."
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

As opposed to Hillary's "normal" lies? Or her husband's lies under oath to a grand jury?

Interestingly, the news outlet that broke the story has apparently back tracked somewhat. Politico originally labelled Carson's story a "fabrication" but removed the term "fabrication" from their headline.

I'm always still in trouble again

"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight

Are you talking about the politico hit job accusing him of lying about going to a particular university?

The hit job that they since admitted they made up....completely?

For what it's worth Carson was offered a scholarship to Westpoint but he never applied to go and never claimed to have attended

Depends on who the "you" is.

I wasn't. I was reflecting on the fact that almost nothing that comes out of the man's mouth ever seems to be true. Fact checkers have yet to find a single true statement.

To my mind, his strangest lie was when during the Republican debate he flatly denied all involvement with supplement company Mannatech when his involvement with them has been pretty extensive. According to him, taking their supplements cured his prostate cancer. But he says he went ahead with prostate surgery anyway in order to set a good example, even though he was already totally cured by bogus supplements prior to the surgery, honest.

He also seems to have fabricated almost everything about his personal history. He claims to have been a wild young boy (contradicted by other students at the school who say he was a bit of a geek and a good student) who was off the rails and who tried to stab someone (contradicted by other students who say they would have heard about this if an attempted stabbing had happened), and who was allegedly told by "experts" that there was nothing they could do to fix his behavior (a very unlikely thing for experts to be telling a 13 year-old), until he conveniently found Christ and everything changed. A very convenient story, nicely fitting racist Republican narratives of an untamable black kid and the power of Jesus. He has elsewhere claimed to have been a victim of an armed robbery, which the police have said there is no record of.

With regard the West Point application, by far the least of his lies, what seems to have happened is that Carson talked to someone in the know who said "Oh, someone with your record would be able to get into West Point no problem, fees all paid etc." He later carelessly reframed that conversation as implying he was literally offered admission to West Point. Since no one really disputes that Carson would likely have been accepted for West Point had he wanted to attend, much of the argument is semantics. Carson's lies about literally everything else are much worse. But here's the relevant discrepancy in his statements about West Point:
Carson acknowledged Friday that he was never offered a full scholarship to West Point, and sought to clarify that he had instead been given an informal offer or "nomination" to attend West Point.
"Because I had done so extraordinarily well you know I was told that someone like me -- they could get a scholarship to West Point. But I made it clear I was going to pursue a career in medicine," Carson told The New York Times. "It was, you know, an informal 'with a record like yours we could easily get you a scholarship to West Point."
                      ...
[However] Carson said several times that he was "offered a full scholarship to West Point." He made that claim in his book, "Gifted Hands," and in several media interviews, including during an appearance on Charlie Rose last month.

Considering that they wrote a lie about him already, why should we take what they say seriously?

Are you hoping that at some future time when people follow that link, the fact checkers will have found at least one true statement by Carson?

Considering that they already posted an article, that ironically, was factually incorrect, doesn't that bring up questions about how reliable their other 'facts' really are on Dr Carson?
