The modern gay rights movement has been characterized by almost complete non-violence..I think that very very few Christians actually appreciate how nice gay rights activists have been towards them on a massive scale.

The activists would have been obliterated had that happened; violence is counter-productive when completely outnumbered. Normalisation and playing the victim card, however, worked like a charm. This is unlike the independence movements that you refer to because they involved trying to oust a minority from power; a violent oath is more viable when one can try to use the numbers of the majority.
