Wrong. For most of the convention, the debate was chiefly between those who advocated for state legislatures choosing the president and those who wanted Congress to do the job. The Founders expressly intended to give the states a say in electing the president. That is exactly why 100 of the 538 votes in the Electoral College are given to states equally. There was never any push for a "popular vote" outside of Pennsylvania delegate James Wilson.

It was a compromise. And the right one to make to knit together the 13 states.

'Compromise' is another word for 'nobody gets their way' - which is precisely the case. None of the founders got what they wanted; the EC was just the least bad of the bad options.
