The argument I've seen is that these kinds of "errors" are random and so affect both parties equally. But, of course, we have no way of knowing that, and elections should not be decided by random errors anyway.

No it wasn't. The whole "hanging chad" fiasco was orchestrated by Democrats and was a deliberate attempt to steal the election from the rightful victor. But I do appreciate the ironic narrative presented by the Democrat party that their own voters are too stupid to be able to read a simple ballot and vote for the candidate they actually want.

When all the votes were finally counted, Gore won Florida and so the election, but because of the SCOTUS we ended up with G.W. and a multi-trillion dollar debacle in Iraq and the middle east.

Well, actually it depends upon which after analysis study you go by, i.e. how do you determine the voters intent with respect to hanging chads. Bush wins in one scenario, Gore wins in the other. According to one standard of analysis, Bush would have won, in the other Gore would have won. The larger study supports the theory that more peoplein Florida intended to vote for Gore than for Bush, and even the Republican senior adviser to Secretary of state Katherine Harris, John Stipanovich admitted to that. So, we'll never know for sure, but the outcome turned out to be disastrous for the country nevertheless.
