Geopolitical actors very much can look the other way at things, and do. This debate came to the forefront a couple years ago when the Saudis had Jamal Khashoggi killed, and the US's executive and legislative branches were at odds as to whether they should care.

I absolutely agree with you. And really, it's probably fair to say that both federal political parties are guilty of this, as are a plethora of geopolitical actors - whether from business or politics, etc.

I was objecting to the claim that neocons and progressives are in any position to do this in a substantive way, though.

I mean, if a Christian or an atheist does the kind of thing you're referring to, is it fair to say "Christians / atheists protect arab countries like Saudi Arabia and its surrogates from punishment"? Is it fair to say "black people protect arab countries like Saudi Arabia and its surrogates from punishment"

No, because - even if Christians / atheists / black people did these things - their race or their position on the existence of gods had nothing to do with the protection they offered. It's a red herring to say "progressives" or "neocons" did the kind of things they're accused of, because no effort has been made

A) to demonstrate that the claim is true

B) to demonstrate that their political "affiliation" had anything to do with it.
