There are at least three other ways that the US economy has been planned and directed from the top down.

The first is energy policy. In an industrial economy, the price of almost everything is significantly influenced by the price of energy. Cheaper energy, economy booms, too expensive and the economy crashes. Energy policy, oil policy, has therefore been central.

The second is how specific industries can be directed. Maybe people will find it easier to accept that tariffs, subsidies and tax rebates have all been ways to do this.
