It helps to keep up with the news (from 2017)!

We actually don't know the state of IRS audits for Trump and we know that the IRS, due to underfunding and other issues, don't audit rich people particularly well. But given the high-quality investigative reporting about the Trump family and Trump Org tax violations, an investigation would be proper.

But Trump continues to violate a clear-cut law, prohibiting Congress from pursuing that investigation. Seems like something this 'conservative' crowd would find suspect in another era.

      • And this was the IRS that was going around abusing their power to attack conservatives too. Yet they didn't find anything to hang Trump with all those years?

I see, so the incompetence of the government is the problem. Nice, but congress could investigate still, they simply need to prove, to the courts, that they have a valid reason to have access to those records. They have had nearly a year to do so, have they done it yet?

It will never not amuse me that putting in at least some trouble to buttress a claim with a source (even if it is just another grievance-filled PRATT shown to be false) is considered to be worse than just spouting off with unsourced and often wrong claims.

Congress does not, in fact, need to prove that it has a valid reason to access Trump's taxes. The law clearly states that it can acquire the records.

And if you cared about the issue rather than merely thought it was useful in this shotgun approach of ever-changing goalpost-shifting questions and snark, you wouldn't have to ask about how the case has developed.

              • It's going to be especially amusing when Democrats finally do get access to Trump's tax returns only to find out that they are in perfect order.

They will find something in there to claim it proves he cheated, even if they have to spell check it.

Easy way to jab that stick in their eye if Trump really thinks his tax records are in "perfect order".

The king of snark and arrogance attacks others for doing what he does all the time. How funny! Than if the Democrats can already access it, why not impeach Trump on his actual crimes vs made up crimes?

Your tin foil hat is showing Sam and I predict more disappointment and failure, soon as this one fails like the other 9 million plans have. Team Rocket, Pinky and the Brain, and Dr Evil will be proud of you.

                        Not even that.

Just like you or I, Trump is going to try to pay as little in taxes as possible. Nearly the only people who don't are those who plan on running for or already holding office. They are more concerned about "optics" than we'd be.

IIRC, Trump has already said that he took every tax deduction that he could. And for billionaire property owners those include a few that aren't typically open for you or me. Or even something that might be available to some like depreciation is going to mean a lot more to someone who owns several multi-million dollar buildings than for them.

Another possibility is that it is not uncommon for folks in high finance to use loopholes that are later closed and labelled "abuses" when they become widely known[1]. That's the advantage of being able to hire top notch financial legal assistance. While nothing illegal was done just the fact that if it was done today it would be illegal would be enough for much of the MSM to announce yet another "bombshell" ("Trump Involved in Shady Tax Schemes!").

                        1. Only rarely is anything being abused but more typically the law is being followed exactly as it was written -- it's just that it was written to allow just what would be called an "abuse" when the public became aware of it so that those responsible could shift the blame.

Nah, it's a lot more fun watching the anti-Trump lunatics vigorously spin their wheels chasing after another wild goose.
