There are very few "African-Americans" in this country that are just "African".

The reality is she is descendent most likely of both black slave and white master, as are most "African-Americans".

A lot of the criticism of Harris that I've read over the years about this issue arises from the left. It isn't so much over whether or not she calls herself "black" but rather "African-American."

Apparently there is a vocal minority among liberal blacks who object to someone who's ancestors weren't slaves in America calling themselves African-American. They don't think that you can be legitimately African-American unless your family comes from that experience and don't like blacks who came to America after the Civil War and especially those who came a hundred years or more after, claiming that title.

I seem to see a lot of conservatives both on this forum and more generally in America, putting a lot of emphasis on the fact that certain politicians (e.g. Obama, Harris) are only part black as opposed to being fully of black descent.

What's motivating the vigorousness with which they make this point? Is their underlying thinking that blacks are hugely genetically inferior, but that having 50% whiteness is enough to be genetically okay? Hence they feel the strong need to point out that these 'black' people are not actually truly black (due to them having the "inferiority" bred out of them)?

I guess that's a difficult question to pose because anyone who holds that view is likely to lie in response to the question and pretend they don't hold it. I'm just wondering why the US conservatives get so worked up about making this distinction.
