The Trump administration has made lowering drug prices one of its top priorities, and last week it unveiled a proposal that could vastly rewrite the way drugs are sold in the United States.

The proposal takes aim at the secret deals that drug companies strike with pharmacy benefit managers, the industry intermediaries that negotiate the price of drugs for insurers and large employers.

These after-the-fact discounts, called rebates, have come under harsh criticism and are blamed for helping to push up the list price of drugs, which consumers are increasingly responsible for paying.

The US has the most over-the-top fingers-in-all-the-pies intelligence agencies in the world. I am quite, quite, sure that if the political will was there, the US government could extract the money and find people who were evading taxes and imprison them and take even more of their money. It's not like anyone would seriously back a greedy rich dude against the entire US intelligence and law-enforcement apparatus.

It's lack of political will, not lack of ability, that leads to the government twiddling its thumbs and choosing to waste its time and resources spying on Black Lives Matter activists while the rich are busy stuffing their fortunes into Panama and the Cayman Islands.

Last I checked, for every dollar the IRS put into investigation and enforcement against tax evasion, they recouped twelve dollars in fines and taxes owing. The political decision by Republicans to cut down on law enforcement of taxes in spite of it being massively profitable for the government, is a political decision to appease their donors.
