A lot of US churches aren't doing a very good job of it, either. The intellectual side of Christianity is often ignored in favor of feel-good theology which, as lilpixie says, leaves kids defenseless in an academic environment.

And CNN's take is... shall we say... "different"

Republicans force climate-related hearing to adjourn after only 2 Democrats show up

Washington (CNN)House Democrats have been holding multiple hearings this month to highlight the impacts of, and science around, climate change, but Republicans managed to scuttle one session Tuesday after just 10 minutes when only two Democrats showed up.

After opening statements in the House Natural Resources subcommittee hearing, GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert motioned to adjourn.

Such motions are common in Congress, usually used by the minority to make the point that they object to the point of a hearing. And the majority party, having more members on all committees, always defeats the motion.
But only two of the subcommittee's five Democrats were in the room. All four Republicans were there, so the Republicans won and the hearing ended.

Gohmert called to adjourn the hearing because he believed the hearing's topic, entitled "The Denial Playbook: How Industries Manipulate Science and Policy from Climate Change to Public Health," falls outside of the Natural Resources Committee's jurisdiction.

"This is now, though, the seventh oversight hearing related to climate change that the majority is holding this month," Gohmert said in his opening statement. "It appears today's hearing topic is well outside our jurisdiction."

Subcommittee Chairman TJ Cox, D-California, said the session would continue as a "Democratic Forum." The witnesses spoke and the event was broadcast on the committee's website.

Of course the Republicans are the bad guys despite the fact that the Democrats didn't care enough about a hearing that they scheduled to bother showing up.

Although one comment I read said that the Republicans missed a golden opportunity to pass all kinds of motions to tie the hands of the committee going forward.

              • On the one hand, you have Frank Schaeffer, who is a disgrace to his father's name, and on the other you have Franklin Graham who is carrying on the honor of his father's legacy. Two children of luminaries of the Christan faith; two different outcomes (although there is still hope for Schaeffer). I think all this really proves is that freewill is alive and well.

Sad to say that most parents either

And it seems to me that there are many parents who take their children to church, but don't really live out the faith at home. Kids tend to be quick to pick up on that - and if it's not worth living the faith, why bother going to church?

Our speaker at the Pregnancy Center Benefit the other night said that we (those of us who are actively living the Christian life) have belief-based relationships, but kids these days have relationship-based beliefs. She went on to explain that, since our kids have more relationships on social media than they do at home, they tend to believe what their "friends" say. She went on to talk about the difference between "friends" (a friend loves at all times) and "friends on Facebook" where you can be "unfriended" just as fast as you can be "friended".

We pretty much choose our relationships based on beliefs, but they pretty much choose their beliefs based on their relationships ("friends").

The overall point was - BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS with your kids!

I don't know. My grandpa was a devout baptist preacher and my dad rejected God for most of his life, and only accepted him after he had a major crisis late in life.

My grandpa lived his faith at home and at church and some of his children grew up Christian and others did not. most of them did eventually become Christian later in life. Ironically some due to my dad converting.

50% of my children rejected God, but Praise Him, 100% of them are in the fold and serving Him.

Well, each person has to decide for themselves. There are certainly exceptions, both ways - but parents are not a small influence, for good or ill.

Obviously that prospect of "a better future" isn't enough to compel her to change her lifestyle now. Makes you wonder how much she really believes what she says.
