The concept of "Fake News" has become common due to it's usage by the Trump administration to primarily describe news unfavorable to itself. This does not mean none of the stories flagged by the administration as fake are actually fake. But it does mean that the criteria for being labelled such is primarily it's take on the Trump administation and its policies. Not the correctness or incorrectness of the reporting*

*However, IF the targeted report does happen to contain factual errors (no matter how small) these will be paraded and harped on for as long as possible as justification for their use of the term.

A perfect example of relabeling fact as "fake news" because the truth it speaks is unfavorable to the current administration.

You're conflating opinion with fact. Strength of opinion doesn't make that any more legitimate.

So what do you call publishing, say a story about some teens harassing a Native American when the full video gives a much different tale?

What about it? I've seen a fairly complete coverage of the event from several sides on CNN. In addition to the original, They published the student's statement. They also put up the video that showed the 4 people the student referenced hurling abuse. The videos show a situation out of hand, and we have seen on the news several different accountings of the event, several different videos of the event. They reported the discrepancies relative to the native american's claim of vietnam service. The 'different tale' you reference is that it shows the students had been agitated prior to the native american stepping in between them. But it doesn't completely vindicate them. They were still agressive and rude to the Native American (the kid standing there could easily have been just in a very awkward position and not knowing what to do as he claimed, but it is clear other students were directly mocking the NA elder). Nobody acted 'correctly' there. But it seems to me all sides of the story were told, at least on CNN.

Is that not what the news is supposed to do? Cover the story and give out all the pertinent information about it?

                          • The response of the teen was up less than 12 hours after i saw the first clip. The aliternate video and comments about premature judgement were up within 24 to 36 hours of the first clip. Seems reasonable to me.

And I agree with you that given it was a teen, there should have been caution to avoid rallying people against him.

The problem is the video had already gone viral. CNN airing his point of view quickly expedited and began presenting a defense for him in what was in fact in the fastest and most effective way possible to the people most likely to be hostile to him. CNN actually handled the whole thing in a pretty even handed way I thought.

                              • Your conspiratorial leanings aside, it is amusing to watch you continually try to paint my motives in dark terms, as if I want to support some liberal agenda as opposed to simply get at or stand by what is true. Ever since I began to ask honest questions about the 'science' used by YECs, i have been amazed at how often the extreems in a debate will percieve anyone seeking truth in a matter as their opposition and a member of 'the other side'.

I referenced CNN because they and fox are tge outlets I happened to follow the story on. And I was actually surprised at how quickly and how prominantly CNN made sure the other elenents of the story were published.

CNN is a common punching bag for Trumpians, so it seemed appropriate to point out their fairness in reporting the story.

Overall I stand by my comments on the whole "fake news" deal. And you Trumpians would do well to heed its warning. I don't limit myself to any single news outlet, and unlike Trumpians or the liberal left, my concern is the truth, not the justification of some half-baked conspiracy laden fantasy view of what is going on in the world.
