I live and work mostly in Thailand. It is a male dominated society certainly, as has been most of the world throughout human history. But, beginning in the West with the Suffragette Movement, women have been attaining full equal rights with men (at least in Law) as have ALL citizens including blacks, other ethnic groups and homosexuals.

I think we should just read it in context:

Ephesians 5, 22-24

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Sometimes theology is the art of making an inconvenient text say the opposite of what the words actually say.

1 Timothy Chapter 2, 11-12
