This is an interesting study of the LAPD that found most false accusations were based on avoiding trouble/finding an alibi, positive attention seeking, and mental illness. Revenge or regret, typical of the societal idea of a false rape accusation, were minority reasons. This study from the UK found that only about 1/5 of those reporting a false rape name their rapist. Considering that most good studies looking at what percentage of rape accusations are false arrive at a number between 2-6%, and from these two studies we can say a minority of those accusations name a perpetrator and a minority of those are based on revenge or regret, the rate of false accusations can be estimated to be less than 1%.
Most of them, from what I recall, had the person who was accused actually admit to it.
