It's just family styles and we're about as white as they come. Personally, I've observed many SJW's seem to have lived a rather sheltered life since there's plenty of white people who have been making 'Mexican' since long before they were born. Plus, good cooks borrow from different styles all the time. One of the things I enjoy about cooking is that aspect, were you can blend things together to create something all your own, so unless they want to eat bland, boring food, 'cultural appropriation' is going to keep happening and needs to.
Back when I was growing up in Southern California, Tex Mex did not exist there. We must have had Cal Mex in those days. It was better than Tex Mex, and closer to authentic I suspect.

I just want to understand the rules to this "cultural appropriation" thing.

      1. If a Texan (white) wore a sombrero, that would be cultural appropriation, right?
      2. So is it cultural appropriation if a Texan (hispanic) wears a sombrero?
      3. What if the hispanic Texan wore a cowboy hat?
      4. What if a hispanic Mexican citizen wore a cowboy hat?
      5. What if a white Mexican citizen wore a sombrero?
      6. What if an asian wore a cowboy hat?

      7. What if a white yankee from New York wore a cowboy hat?

Can't say for sure, but the term Tex-Mex refers to Mexican inspired dishes, that originated usually north of the Rio Grand, and contain one or more of the following: ground beef or pork, black beans, yellow cheese, grain tortillas, and more spices. I would agree that there's variations of the different types, but it all pretty much considered 'Tex-Mex'.

If the SJWs had their way we couldn't buy french fries from McDonalds because it would be a scottish restaurant appropriating french culture. come to think of it they couldn't sell hamburgers either. Just haggis.
Nobody knows if haggis was invented in Scotland, so they might not be able to serve haggis either.

Actually that particular dish could be found throughout Europe all the way to Greece in ancient times. I've long suspected it was a Celtic thing.

Oh yeah. I know about Tex Mex, it seems to be what "Mexican Restaurants" serve most places in the USA instead of Mexican food.

If you've ever been more than a hundred miles south of the border and nowhere near a tourist destination you'll find that the food is (for lack of a better way of saying it) significantly different for being so similar.

FWIW I don't believe cultural appropriation is a bad thing. I like foreign food. I remain skeptical of the veracity of the story cited in the OP and the details thereof, as it's not being carried by any news outlets I would personally deem reputable.

It occurred in my state, it was on every news channel in Oregon and made its way to the East Coast. I guess you could say we have homefield advantage when it comes to local news.

I have not been 100 miles into Mexico, but I have spent time in a small (except for a week around Easter) fishing village and have eaten some very good food. Most not much like TexMex. Fish head soup, and turtle soup, good food. Even the supposed Mexican standards were nothing much like TexMex. So yeah.

makes sense. Can't expect a whole country to eat nothing but burritos and tacos all the time.

They are an essential part of the trifecta of an ideal Mexican meal: a beef burrito, enchilada and taco. A #11 combination plate at most Mexican restaurants.

If a taco had sex with a burrito, the kid would be an enchilada. Just add sauce.
