  • L. Lin Wood, Trump Conspiracy Theorist Lawyer, Retires To Avoid Disbarment

It's actually been kind of sad to see L. Lin Wood's deterioration. He'd done some great lawyering with the defense of Richard Jewell, and later the family of JonBenet Ramsey (and even Nicholas Sandmann in several of his defamation suits).

But then November of 2020 hit, and we got to see a national-level mental breakdown of a lawyer into a foaming-at-the-mouth conspiracy theorist spewing Q-Anon nonsense and making absurd claims about 'The Kraken' of 'just around the corner' revalations that would magically show that the election had been stolen. That further deteriorated to public ravings about John Roberts being behind the 'killing' of Scalia, claims that Epstein is still alive and will come forward and reveal the truth about Roberts, that Mike Pence is a 'child molester', and countless other Trump KKKultist whackjobberies.

Lin Wood, an attorney who tried to overturn 2020 presidential results on behalf of former President Donald Trump, retired from practicing law effective Wednesday after the State Bar of Georgia weighed his possible disbarment.
The Georgia bar granted Wood’s retirement request, the organization said in a letter to him Wednesday.
“You may not practice law in this State or in any other state or jurisdiction and you may not hold yourself out as a lawyer,” the bar said in its letter, noting that it has dropped two investigations into Wood’s professional conduct.
The Georgia bar had been examining whether to disbar Wood, who was part of Trump’s legal team in the 2020 election. The bar asked Wood to undergo a mental health assessment as part of a probe opened in 2021. Former colleagues said Wood displayed “erratic, abusive, and unprofessional behavior,” according to the bar.
Wood said that the investigation and mental exam request were politically motivated and sued to stop it. In his Tuesday letter to the bar, he said of his retirement, “I understand that this request is unqualified, irrevocable and permanent.”
Wood and the Georgia bar did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment.
This isn’t the first time Wood is facing disciplinary proceedings for his help in trying to overthrow the 2020 election. In Michigan, a judge ruled in 2021 that Wood and Sidney Powell were among a group of attorneys that must pay the state and city of Detroit $175,250 for abusing the legal system with unfounded conspiracy theories.
Wood was included in a group of Trump loyalists who got suspended from Twitter for posting election conspiracies, which once violated the site’s policies.

(Updates with Georgia bar accepting Wood's resignation request.)

Really sad to see how Trump can pull people down to the lowest of depths with him.

There is an interesting article in the New York Times about the MAGA phenomenon, titled ‘The Rage and Joy of MAGA America’.

Why do none of your arguments against Trump penetrate this mind-set? The Trumpists have an easy answer: You’re horrible, and no one should listen to horrible people. Why were Trumpists so vulnerable to insane stolen-election theories? Because they know that you’re horrible and that horrible people are capable of anything, including stealing an election.

At the same time, their own joy and camaraderie insulate them against external critiques that focus on their anger and cruelty. Such charges ring hollow to Trump supporters, who can see firsthand the internal friendliness and good cheer that they experience when they get together with one another. They don’t feel angry — at least not most of the time. They are good, likable people who’ve just been provoked by a distant and alien “left” that many of them have never meaningfully encountered firsthand.

      The same article:

Once you understand both dynamics, however, so much about the present moment makes clearer sense, including the dynamics of the Republican primary. Ron DeSantis, for example, channels all the rage of Trumpism and none of the joy. With relentless, grim determination he fights the left with every tool of government at his disposal. But can he lead stadiums full of people in an awkward danceto “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People? Will he be the subject of countless over-the-top memes and posters celebrating him as some kind of godlike, muscular superhero?

Among the memes, Jesus standing behind Trump, hands on shoulders, Trump’s hand touching His is very interesting - along with the comments of the MAGA folks who buy that portrait.

Two highly relevant quotes. This attitude towards Trump from "the base" has all the hallmarks of a cult.

        "It ain't necessarily so
        The things that you're liable
        To read in the Bible
        It ain't necessarily so
        ."
