More and more often the job of the MSM is to spin or even conceal the news rather than to report it.

IMO, it has to do with Leftist Fascism. Big media has gotten so in bed with the Left, both intentionally and unintentionally, that it simply does its bidding. I don't think they even realize it anymore. It's just natural for them to run to extremists like Al Sharpton for his perspective on anything that smacks of race. Just like big media wants AOC's opinion on politics, etc.

There is also a tendency for them to make man-bites-dog stories when the news cycle is quiet.

As traditional newspapers found that they were losing subscribers and nobody was buying papers of subscribing to them, they had to find other ways to make money. Turns out that printing exaggerated headlines and clickbait to get people to go to their ad-supported sites was the answer, so that is what they did. Turned from newspapers to tabloid gossip rags. And racism sells.
