Racial and ethnic differences in gun deaths among kids are stark. In 2021, 46% of all gun deaths among children and teens involved Black victims, even though only 14% of the U.S. under-18 population that year was Black. Much smaller shares of gun deaths among children and teens in 2021 involved White (32%), Hispanic (17%) and Asian (1%) victims.

Looked at another way, Black children and teens were roughly five times as likely as their White counterparts to die from gunfire in 2021. There were 11.8 gun deaths per 100,000 Black children and teens that year, compared with 2.3 gun deaths per 100,000 White children and teens. The gun death rate among Hispanic children and teens was also 2.3 deaths per 100,000 in 2021, while it was lower among Asian children and teens (0.9 per 100,000).

Weighted Averages. Whites are ~70% of the population, Blacks are ~13% So 2.3/100k for whites is weighted more heavily than 11.5/100k for blacks.

But how can leftists possibly reconcile their perfectly compatible desires to remove guns and remove harms to black children, when guns are... causing harms to black children?

Woe is me, as a progressive I just cannot fathom how I can both support fewer guns and fewer black child gun deaths. How can I possibly ever reconcile those two fully compatible ideas?

When was the last time you heard one reference the crime problem in places like Chicago where the shooting victims are overwhelmingly black unless the topic was first broached by a conservative? It is their preferred topic to ignore when it comes to gun-related violence.

I have no problem with removing guns from criminals. How about a 5 years mandatory prison sentence for those using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Yup. Unlike star, who appears to think that firearms somehow act on their own, removing the violent criminal element makes the most sense. But that is generally opposed by the left. Heck, nowadays they tend to release them without bail and reduce or dismiss the charges.

You have to wonder why we didn't see these rates of murder in black communities 50-70 years ago when social conditions were arguably worse and guns were generally easier to get.
