    Source: FOXNews

One source told Fox that retired Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward "really wanted" to do the job, but ultimately decided that he could not.

A senior administration official said that Harward's acceptance of the national security adviser post was contingent on the agreement of his family. The official said Harward's wife and other family members wanted him to remain in the private sector.

Harward retired from the Navy in 2013 after a career spanning nearly 40 years. Upon his retirement, he became chief executive officer for defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin in the United Arab Emirates.

Harward told The Associated Press that the Trump administration was "very accommodating to my needs, both professionally and personally."

"It's purely a personal issue," Harward said Thursday evening. "I'm in a unique position finally after being [in the] military for 40 years to enjoy some personal time."

So basically, Harward didn't want to be drug through the mud by the media considering the shameful way fake news outlets have treated the President and first family.

I wanted to discuss Jason Chaffetz's rather unexpected announcement of departure from congress, and resurrecting this thread seemed as a good a place to do it as any...

For those who don't know Chaffetz has been a "rising star" in the Republican party, and has been the chair of the House Oversight Committee where he has been blocking all investigations into Trump and enthusing about investigations into Clinton. His unexpected announcement that not only will he not stand for congress next term, but also that he'll probably leave before his current term is us, has surprised many people.

Since he was on my personal list of Awful and Horrible US Political Figures That Just Need To Go Away, I'm quite pleased about this. It's a list that seems to have been getting a lot of ticks lately... Clinton, Scalia, Ailes, O'Reilly, and now Chaffetz. Bannon, Nunes, Sessions and Wasserman Schultz have half-ticks due to recusals or being on-the-outs, but it would be nice to see them pushed out entirely. And hopefully the Russia scandal will take down Trump. That merely leaves McConnell, Ryan, Pence, and to a lesser extent Schumer and Pelosi and the other corporatist Dems on the list.

My own speculation on why Chaffetz is going is that behind the scenes the Russia investigation is heating up and the FBI is getting ready to move, and Chaffetz doesn't want to be near that when it goes down, so he views his current position on the House Oversight Committee trying to block the investigation into Trump as toxic to his long-term political aspirations, so his thinking is that he'll take a couple of years vacation from politics and go earn some large money in the private sector, and then return to politics untarnished once the government has finished exploding in Russia-scandals.

My personal bet is a bit more prosaic than that, though my prognostications and divinations are frequently wrong. I suspect that his Utah constituents are not amused by his erstwhile support for Trump and co. The Mormons have resisted the real politik that the evangelicals embraced. If he does not resign, he risks losing to a more conservative Mormon challenger. (By conservative here, I mean religiously conservative, not necessarily politically conservative.)

              I hope it's not a sex scandal.

I think his chart is much simpler than that. He probably has one column labeled "Good" with all the liberals under it (with Obama at the top, naturally), and a second column labeled "Bad" with all the conservatives under it (Trump would be at the top of this one).

                        Who's next off the Trumptanic?

Jeff Sessions, and Robert Mueller, both appear to be in the firing line (pun intended).

But Tillerson has made it very clear he thinks Trump's comments about Sessions are unprofessional, and he seems to have been on the brink of resigning out of general disgust at the Trump administration for a while now.

Or will Kushner finally get his security clearance suspended for his repeated 'forgetfulness' about all his meetings with foreign agents?

So... as the Titanic sinks, who will be next to jump ship, or walk the gangplank?

I do not consider Kushner as much a problem as Trump Jr, and others that remain on staff and in the shadows as the best jump ship or are pushed under the bus.

Sessions is a competent good Attorney General caught in the cross fire of Trump's temper tantrums, and a convenient scapegoat.

Actually, I consider the whole situation a bizzaro Alice and Wonderland with Trump as the mad Queen. The main problem is naive, incompetent, unprofessional, and dangerous casual relationships with Russia. There is unlikely collusion on a big scale, but Trump Jr. opened the door to conspiracy charge by arranging a meeting with the Russians in hope of getting the dirt on Hilary.
