Shutting the internet up and controlling the news is like trying to stop a tsunami with a paper towel. Good luck to them. China has been trying to do that for decades now. and failing.

I don't know about that. My last girlfriend worked in a medical lab that included two women from China. Neither one of these well-educated women knew anything about the Tiananmen Square protest and were quite shocked when informed about it. China has apparently successfully kept their people from hearing of it.

But then that happened a long time ago, I am sure you could ask a lot of Americans about it and they would be ignorant of it, too. Heck half of them probably don't know where China is.

If something like that happened in Washington D.C.'s National Mall (the area between the U.S. Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial -- not some shopping center), I would imagine at least the folks with a good education would have at least heard of it.

China's actually pretty good at it, but they heavily censor EVERYthing. The only way undesired news gets spread is by extreme circumlocution.

They spread spam, which is trying to sell things, which is capitalism, which seems to be gaining strength in China despite it being a communist country. And they map the internet (search engines) which would not be needed if they were keeping all the scary democratic stuff away from their people. Just block off the net outside of China. Why bother with the rest of the world?
