  • D.C votes overwhelmingly to become the 51st State

    http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...ome-51st-state
    ===============

So a single city will be a state? and have the voting power and representation of an entire state?

I thought the whole reason there was a D.C was to provide neutrality so there would be no favoritism of any state that housed the Federal Government. So much for that.

    I'm agin' it

I'm for it, just so people will stop calling it "Washington". It's confusing, since there is a state called Washington.
Middle-of-the-road swing voter. Feel free to sway my opinion.

If it becomes a state, where should we move all of congress and the federal offices?

They would remain there. That is why I think it is a conflict of interest. I think that is why they created a separate NON-STATE area for the federal government in the first place. If they wanted the government in a state, they could have just left it where it was. No need for a new state.

They need two senators like they need stricter gun control.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Why should a single city get to be a state and have senators? That is just freaking crazy.

If they want to be part of a state, they can just go back to being part of Maryland and Virginia. Then they get their representation.

Why does DC even get 3 electoral votes? That is asinine too.

The city name was there first.

Besides, the name of the small town I live in ends in "Road" - talk about confusing when I try to get a cab ride home from work.

just dissolve DC back into Maryland and Virginia and they will have full representation.

I think DC should get a voting member in Congress, but don't see the need for statehood. (Though it still has more people than Wyoming.)

It doesn't need a voting member in congress. IT IS A CITY.

By that logic we should make every large city it's own state.

Its population is larger than Vermont. It's sensible to make it a state, or to let it join one of the surrounding states. But the people in it want it to be their own state, and in a democracy what they want matters.

Do you remember the phrase "no taxation without representation"? Currently the people in D.C. are taxed by the federal government but they have no representation there.

I thought the whole reason there was a D.C was to provide neutrality so there would be no favoritism of any state that housed the Federal Government.
Well it was originally because it was feared that putting the capital in New York city would allow business to corrupt government, so they wanted the capital geographically separated from business interests to prevent corruption. Long term, that hasn't been a successful plan.

Making D.C. a state seems unlikely to cause any 'favoritism' to the state that houses the federal government. Why would it? The federal government has nothing to do with any particular state, and is not affected more currently by states it's geographically near.

"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein
