I gotcha bro - I read it like you intended, not like you wrote it.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I second guess that assumption every day and after every lecture. I make no claim beyond the obvious that I do try, and try hard, to be more effective in tomorrow's lecture than I am today.

        This is still anecdotal evidence
        Education and Lifetime Earnings
        .
There are substantial differences in lifetime earnings by educational attainment

Men with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $900,000 more in median lifetime earnings than high school graduates. Women with bachelor's degrees earn $630,000 more. Men with graduate degrees earn $1.5 million more in median lifetime earnings than high school graduates. Women with graduate degrees earn $1.1 million more.

The taxes on that average in increased earnings are sufficient to repay the costs of a college education. This is the basis for my personal support for publicly-financed college education for all who qualify. This model, already in place throughout most of the developed world, has long since proven itself sustainable.

It's also possible that your institution is a notable exception. But I do agree that there are LOTS of college students - like those where my wife works at Texas A&M - who go to school for the purpose of earning a degree toward a specific goal in life.

I think we're talking about kids who get pushed into college where there's really not a "life goal" that encompasses a degree plan toward that goal.
I think it's too much to ask every student to enter college with appropriate goals, and I question the implication that college is no more than a job training program. On the way to an undergraduate degree in engineering, I took courses in a broad range of subjects, from Early Medieval Art to Tudor-Stuart England, things that have greatly enriched my life but with no prospect of enriching me financially. That said, I'd agree that a college degree isn't suitable for everyone, or even for all college students. Neither Steve Jobs nor Bill Gates completed their undergraduate programs.

That, my friend, would be an inference, not an implication.

Most of us had a high school guidance counselor.
It is assumed that part of his/her job was to help us decide what we want to be when we grow up.
College should - in some real way - prepare us for life, and the high school guidance counselor helps with that direction.

Unfortunately, there's a push to go to college even where there's no desire or interest on the part of the young person.
                      That's what I was referencing.
Meanwhile, both of my daughters home-schooled, and when they got to college, the red-headed kid absolutely excelled. She already knew how to do bibliographies, citations, effectively utilize the tools in the library, set out a study plan and stick to it....
She was amazed at the overwhelming number of kids in her college freshman class who didn't have a clue, or even know where to start.

My other daughter thought college was a place to run wild and do fun stuff, and dropped out, but managed to come back at a later date.

On the way to an undergraduate degree in engineering, I took courses in a broad range of subjects, from Early Medieval Art to Tudor-Stuart England, things that have greatly enriched my life but with no prospect of enriching me financially. And we AGREE that a college degree isn't suitable for everyone - which is why I always say, IF you are going to college, take the basics first at a junior college or (the rest of the world calls them something else) to see if it's a fit.

By the way - my red-headed kid got her first degree in Police Science, because she thought she wanted to be a cop like her daddy, then got another degree in nursing because she figured out what she wanted to do in life. Her degree in law enforcement actually was a very good framework for her work with people in crisis.

It works in English, and maybe in European languages - but not, as far as a I know, with Kanji: the smallest stroke missing or out of place quite often results in no comprehension for native speakers. Oddly - it doesn't happen quite as readily for English speakers who know the kanji.
