Argument from silence is a bad argument even without that verse.

      Absolutely.

This is sort of vague. Do you have anything to help pin this down? The EO had a hard time finding envoys for interacting with the West after the Fourth Crusade sacked Constantinople in 1204; a number of them ended up decamping to the West. I agree that nominal Christians have been around for much of church history (I doubt there were many during/just after times of persecution, since nominal Christians would logically be the first to recant).

        • Nominal Christians seem to have first made a noticeable appearance just after Rome accepted Christianity as the State Religion. Though from Paul's and James' comments, it would seem there have always been a few. Technically, even from the first: note the falling away among the disciples after Jesus spoke of eating his flesh and drinking his blood (John 6:48 - 66)

Sorry, it's too many years since I read it. It was definitely an envoy from Constantinople and I think they might have been going to Rome, but I can't remember what the subject of their discussions was, or which historian I was reading.

I suspect you're referring to Georgius Gemistus Plethon, who was an envoy, but not a bishop. He wasn't an atheist, per se, but he was rather more enamored of the paganism of old than Christianity.

If its the same guy I'm thinking of he was definitely enamored with the Greco-Roman pagan gods and wanted their worship revived.

Correct, an anti-abortion position isn't in scripture.

I'm not using the lack of words of Jesus in the Bible to prove he didn't address a particular topic. But the fact is he he does address things he presumably thought were more important than abortion or homosexuality, e.g. divorce. And his silence on abortion can reasonably be understood as Jesus, as a Jew, accepting the Jewish tradition that full human rights are obtained only when the first breath is drawn.
