This is something I've slowly been getting into lately. I've already lost 15 lbs in about 6 weeks by changing my diet - simply by choosing healthier snacks.

In a nutshell, Dr. Casey Means and her brother Calley Means are health advocates that have bent the ears of Donald Trump, RFK Jr. (and many others) to highlight the deteriorating health of the American population. Dr. Casey Means (a surgeon) recognized this problem firsthand as a doctor. Her brother witnessed this as he was once a lobbyist for 'Big Food' in this country, and saw how we are being taken advantage of for the sake of corporate profits - and that the government agencies meant to protect us from harmful food ingredients are actually being run by the same entities involved in 'Big Food.'

Anyway, I encourage anyone interested to seek out one of their many interviews to get the full scoop. I thought their interview with Tucker Carlson was particularly revealing, although I know many people would be put off by the identity of the host. If you can't stand Tucker, there are many others.

I thought this was interesting. Kellogg's adds problematic food dyes and preservatives in their foods that are sold in America - that have been banned in Europe. So they exclude such ingredients in Europe. Why are they allowed here? Maybe because the FDA is run by operatives of 'Big Food'?

And this is what our children are eating.

    ---------------------------------------------------

"The largest grassroots action on food ingredients in US history. These food dyes - like Red 40 - are causing attention disorders in children, are linked to cancer, and over 92 million boxes of artificially colored Froot Loops are sold each year ALONE. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), a preservative, is banned in Europe in food and has been found to be toxic in animals, may cause liver, thyroid and kidney, and lung problems, can act as a tumor promoter, and may mimic estrogen. Kellogg’s does not include these ingredients in the Froot Loops they sell in Europe and other countries, because these countries have stricter standards. They uniquely include them in the American version, and American children are uniquely sicker than kids in other countries.

Today, Kellogg’s refused to meet with the peaceful protestors and Vani. In fact, a Kellogg’s employee held up a sign from indoors saying “get off our grass” to a lawn full of moms, dads, children, and concerned citizens."

When I was recovering from my heart bypass surgery, I was sent to a dietician to help me lose weight. She told me that one of the biggest problems with our diet here in the USA was the amount of preservatives in our food. That they actually keep us from losing fat, causing diabetes and heart disease, etc. So she told me to eat more natural foods and skip the heavily processed foods with preservatives and such in it.

Another problem is inflammation. A lot of our foods promotes inflammation in our guts, and she gave me a list of foods that help reduce inflammation. Here is a website from John's Hopkins that talks about inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods

But other than diet, one other big difference between Europeans and Americans is exercise. I noticed this while over in Germany recently. In Germany (and Europe in general) people live mostly in smaller villages and towns where things are closer together, so they tend to walk a lot more, where here in the USA we tend to drive everywhere because things are generally more spread out. I was walking an average of 5 miles a day in Germany, where here I generally don't walk anywhere other than from the parking lot to the store.

I did not know that about preservatives. But the advice I have been following is if I can't picture what an ingredient is in my food, then I probably shouldn't be eating it. In short, I try to steer clear of anything that I don't know what it is, or anything that sounds like a chemical additive.

Uh oh ... From the Hopkins link of foods to avoid
        • Processed meat, such as bologna, bacon, sausage and lunchmeat
Not an issue for me, but you old twebbers talk a lot about bacon.

Yes, ultra-processed foods are the worst. I have adjusted my diet and am enjoying the tighter waistline. Mostly, all I did was replace potato chips and corn chips with pistachios, cheese and fruit. The pounds melted away really quickly. I am down to the more stubborn fat now. I need to lose another 10 pounds to get into the "normal" weight for my BMI.

Wow, hadn't thought of that. I have nowhere to walk in my neighborhood. We don't even have sidewalks, only narrow streets. I'd have to drive somewhere so I can walk.

Obviously they were not right about that part. Some vegan probably snuck that one in!

I have to admit I still eat too much processed food. Being a bachelor it is hard to eat well, since eating fresh ends up with a lot of wasted food as it doesn't store well. Ozempic has been great at helping me lose weight. I can resist the snack foods better now.

Same here. My doctor tells me I need to walk more, but other than just walking around pointlessly in my neighborhood, I really don't live somewhere that is conducive to walking. I wold end up getting run over walking down the main street outside my subdivision. I never was one for just pointless exercise, like stationary bikes or walking around a track. I get bored too quickly and give up. If I actually have a goal in mind, like walking to a store, or something, then I can do it. But not around here. In Germany, we walked all over the place, to the store, to restaurants, visiting the town square, etc. And I didn't even pay attention to how much I was walking.

Oh, I know what you mean. I recall too well that buying perishables as a bachelor can waste a lot of money. I recall switching to nonfat milk because it would last longer in the fridge; like 4 weeks compared to about 1 with whole milk. I can't say I drink milk at all anymore.

One of my kids left a treadmill in my basement that I am thinking about dusting off. I can use it while watching podcasts or something.

Yeah, I listen to podcasts on the treadmill. I don't really have time to listen to them otherwise.

I used to like to walk around town. Now it hurts too much. Most of the walking I do is walking back and forth in my little apartment during my daily phone conversations with my best friend, and even then I end up sitting down after ten or fifteen minutes because of discomfort.

With me it's my shoulder. I think I ripped a tendon or something and I keep reinjuring it so it never heals. Been a problem since July and gets so bad that some nights I can't sleep.

Yet surely the US food industry and its customers are part of the capitalist system, espoused here as the greatest economic system humans have devised.

You want a capitalist system. You want minimal government involvement in society. You want the freedom to choose to live as you wish insofar as the law permits, and then you complain when big business, the outcome of capitalism, goes for profit at the expense of human health.

If you study the issue you will discover there is much more going on than simply "the capitalist system". US government agencies that were created to protect the citizens from being poisoned have been infiltrated by those very forces that profit from these additives. So, like your Nazis, it is a cooperation between big government and big business. Fascism. These profiteers need to be routed out. Kamala isn't going to do it because she is the establishment candidate. Trump will rout them out.

Would you prefer Germany switch over to a Soviet-style economy where the government owns everything? That would solve the problem, right?

If you want an entirely capitalist system you accept what it gives you.
