  • Is Incest Morally Wrong?

Where there is no possibility of child bearing, say between a father and adult son, or between sisters, in what sense would a secularist consider this immoral?

Leaving aside "secularists," Bible literalists can't consider incest *inherently* wrong, even when child-bearing *is* possible, since (taking Genesis literally) that was the way humanity progressed beyond the First Couple.

So you don't consider it immoral?

They would base it on the psychological harm, maybe?

While it might be the way it started because of necessity, God did prohibit it later (see Leviticus 18 for example) and made it immoral.

Right, as believers we see it as immoral. It violates the law of God. But why would non believers see it as immoral?

This brings up an interesting a priori, and I'm not sure where I stand.

Are certain things *inherently* immoral, irrespective of what "God says" about them?

Or does the supposed "morality" of an action depend solely on God's explicitly stated will about that action?

The same context (Lev. 18) forbids sexual relations during a woman's monthly period. Is that also "immoral"?

The Law of the Obsolete Covenant is no longer in force under the New and better Covenant. Even if we accept the dubious premise that the Decalogue is still Law for us, what is the basis for reviving "moral" concepts from other parts of the defunct Law?

The Law of God is written on the heart of man. Is it not self evident that having sex with your wife on her monthly is not the same offense as having sex with say, her mother? It seems like it's intuitive as to what is right and wrong here. A man having sex with an animal. What's wrong with that picture? You see what i'm saying?

But Sparko and seer seem to be asserting that the explicit instructions of God in Lev. 18 are what converted the practice from moral or neutral to immoral. Given that framing of the argument, how is sex with a woman during Aunt Flo's monthly visit different?

The bestiality thing is qualitatively different. It is "unnatural," not to mention icky, independent of whether it is "immoral."
