Philosophy 201 Guidelines

Cogito ergo sum

Here in the Philosophy forum we will talk about all the "why" questions. We'll have conversations about the way in which philosophy and theology and religion interact with each other. Metaphysics, ontology, origins, truth? They're all fair game so jump right in and have some fun! But remember...play nice!

As I've said, that would be one end of the Block Universe (unless it extends further back than that, of course).

But that makes no sense. If as science says, all of matter and energy was contained in that small thing - there was nothing else at that point. There was no other end to the Block universe. There was no block universe, just that one human sized thing.

It contained all matter and energy of the universe AT THAT TIME. Just like right now the universe contains all matter and energy in the universe at THIS TIME. Every moment in time would contain all of matter and energy of the universe at that moment.

What time is that in static time? The point is there was no "block" universe - nor could there be. When all matter and energy was contained at that small point, it was not part of a larger block universe - it was all there was...

The block universe contains all time, and at any point in that time contains all of the matter and energy that exists in the universe at that time.

Yes, it was part of the block universe: the first part. Think of that GIF file I showed earlier with the dot and circle. It was a stack of 4 images. First one was a dot, second a small circle, third a larger circle, and 4th was the largest circle. If the entire stack (gif file) was the block universe, the first frame was the big bang. at that "time" that frame contained all of the matter in the "universe" - a dot. At frame two, it contained all of the matter in the universe at that "time" a small circle. and so on.

But there were no other frames when the universe was a dot. There was only that dot, that is all that existed. That is exactly what Big Bang cosmology claims.

That kind of depends on whether you are a Presentist, or an Eternalist, or a Growing Block theorist. (Or something else.)

                      No, that's what Presentists claim.

No, that is what your and my link said concerning Big bang cosmology. The universe GREW from this dot. Not that this dot was a small part of a wider universe that already existed, that wider universe did not exist when the dot did, it was in fact the expanding dot that created the universe as we see it today. Also, growing block theory would accommodate Big bang cosmology.

So, the article was written by a Presentist, or a Growing Block theorist.

You are confusing philosophy and science.

Err no I'm not. The science is Big bang cosmology, the universe began small then rapidly expanded to the size we see today.

The Big Bang event is a physical theory that describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature.[1] Various cosmological models of the Big Bang explain the evolution of the observable universe from the earliest known periods through its subsequent large-scale form.[2][3][4] These models offer a comprehensive explanation for a broad range of observed phenomena, including the abundance of light elements, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, and large-scale structure. The overall uniformity of the Universe, known as the flatness problem, is explained through cosmic inflation: a sudden and very rapid expansion of space during the earliest moments.

remember that the block universe "always" existed in it's entirety. That's what the block universe is. All of time existing simultaneously. So yeah the future universe existed at the big bang. The big bang was just the "first frame" of the movie.

Right and that contradicts Big bang cosmology, which says that the universe grew from the dot to what we see today. As a matter of fact, of what use is the Big bang in a Block universe.
