Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. • Adam and Eve were Homo Erectus?

I wonder how Christians, those who also believe in evolution, think about this. The first human species, as far as we know thus far I believe is Homo erectus which lived some 2 million years ago in S. Africa. So I wonder how Christian evolutionists think about that. There were many other species of humans that lived in different parts of Africa as well as Neanderthals who I believe emerged later in Europe, but I believe Homo Erectus is the first human species known of.
So, do Christian evolutionists believe that Adam and Eve were Homo Erectus and was the Garden of Eden actually in S. Africa?
I wonder also what Christians think about all of these other species of humans. Do they even consider them to be human. Homo Sapiens (thats us) for instance all have Neanderthal DNA so they were obviously human.
So where do Christians who also believe in evolution as well as Christians who don't, fit Adam and Eve into that picture?

Adam and Eve being Homo Erectus presents no difficulty for Genesis, apart from the timing. But the timing cannot be squared with paleontology anyway.
The Garden of Eden is Paradise - it never was on Earth.

Right, and the timing would only differ by a couple million years anyway. But what does Chtistianity say about the timing?

But the timing cannot be squared with paleontology anyway.
      What does that mean?

The Garden of Eden is Paradise - it never was on Earth.
WHAAAT? The Garden of Edem was not meant to be understood as being on earth? That's a new one on me. Who came up with that idea? And when?

The late Glenn Morton who used to post here strongly believed that Adam and Eve lived more than 5 million years ago.

I'm always still in trouble again

Well If that's as far back as humans go (I really don't know) then it only makes sense that Adam and Eve were Homo Erectus and the Garden of Eden would have to have been somewhere in S. Africa according to Christianity being that Adam was the first human.

But what does Christianity or Judaism say about that. I always assumed that Adam and Eve, according to Christianity, was intended to be taken literally. I mean doesn't the line of ancestry go from Adam to Jesus in just so many thousand of years? That doesn't square if Adam was Homo Erectus 2 million years ago.

Actually he places it in the Mediterranean basin that had dried up during the Messinian salinity crisis and ended by the Zanclean deluge when the Atlantic Ocean poured in to refill it.

Well that's interesting but the question I'm interested in is what is the Christian teaching on the subject? Was the Garden of Eden story meant to be taken literally. And do they see Adam and Eve as Homo Erectus humans created over 2 million years ago in a garden in S.Africa?
I don't think so, because the ancestral line from Adam to Jesus is only a few thousand generations. I think you mentioned you believe in evolution so how do you square that with this particular biblical account?

Adam was created before the Earth had experienced rain. That should provide food for thought.

Glenn was a Christian. He's the only one I'm familiar with who ever advocated for what you are basically talking about here.

And yet the Garden was filled with fruit bearing trees. Errors in the timeliness of creation were obviously made such as the creating of the light which was separated from the darkness before the sun and stars were created. But I have never heard the idea that the Garden of Eden was not on earth as you have proposed. Is that the Christian teaching? Or did you come up with that on your own?

That's not what I asked you but obviously you are avoiding to answer.

Your OP asked what Christians think about this. I provided you with the only Christian I had heard of who ever advocated something like that.

And I answered that, said it was interesting and followed that up in post #9 with other questions. Rather than answering that you gave me the same answer you gave to me in the previous post.

It isn't a position that I hold so you're asking the wrong person.

It is derived from the information made available in the Bible. No doubt others have connected the dots in the same way that I have.
