Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

Humans regularly do things that our against our instincts -- and not because there is a more powerful instinct driving them.

An instinct to feed her babies?

When she knows that the food will be forthcoming anyway?

So do many animals. Altruism and reciprocal behavior are common to several species against their instincts without the necessity for training – that being your initial argument.

Rape and murder were (and are) commonplace between rival human tribes just as it is among chimpanzees et al. Generally, it remains an aberration within a given tribe and this applies both to human tribal society as well as to our simian cousins

I am at a loss trying to think of anything that could not reasonably be attributed to one instinct being subordinated to another, except for some trained behaviours.

It depends upon how you define ‘aberration’ within a polygamous species. Our closest ancestors in the animal kingdom, chimpanzees, are polygynous i.e., one dominant male, mates with multiple females. Apes are known to be forceful in their intentions, e.g., grabbing females by the genitals – 'when you’re dominant they let you do it'.
