Apologetics 301 Guidelines

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

Racism, Perfectly Normal?

  • Racism, Perfectly Normal?

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights..."

    Since I believe that all men are God's image bearers and have a transcendent worth that is not dependent (as I said in the past) on varying social constructs, I can logically conclude that racism is evil. We are all, in one sense, God's offspring. But on what basis does the atheist condemn racism? Isn't racism merely tribalism and tribalism a natural outcome of the evolutionary process? In other words - biologically normal?

                That is not what I asked.

                The short answer is that pejorative and demeaning attitudes towards other human beings who happen to be of a different skin tone appear to be learned behaviours. They cannot be demonstrated to be innate.

                  Well that is not what the study I linked suggested. Racism is tied to tribalism which is innate. And how are "learned behaviors" not natural? What makes them unnatural?

                            To answer with respect to my recent thread on moral foundations, I'll note that racism comes from one of the three widespread moral ideas that are held by conservatives but not by liberals - the idea of loyalty to an in-group and opposition to an out-group.

                            I note that in the bible there is plenty of racism - gentiles are generally regarded as second-class to Jews, and there are genocidal commands against a variety of other races. I also note that the Declaration of Independence text quoted in the OP was written in a nation that had race-based slavery. Taken together these points mean that the OP is fundamentally deceitful in its implication that Christianity and a bible-derived theology is responsible for people being opposed to racism. In fact those have historically perpetuated racism. The group that has most opposed racism in history is modern secular liberals. Seer has adopted a morality based on modern secular liberal ideas, and projected that back onto parts of the bible, finding a very small proof-text for it and completely ignoring the rest of what the bible says on the subject, and hence deceived himself into thinking his morality is 'biblical' in origin rather than owing its views to modern secular liberalism.

                            As to the OP question about 'biological normalness' of an us vs them mentality... I have no idea whatsoever.

                            However the OP assumption that the morality of atheists must be identical to the evolutionary process and/or derived from it, is stunning ignorant.

                              Tribal (racist) violence is a normal part of chimpanzee behavior and historically has been a normal part of the behavior of their nearest relatives - i.e. humans. The OT is full of it - so is secular history.. It is a natural outcome of the evolutionary process in that we are predisposed to care about and protect our own loved ones and extended families and communities - i.e. tribes - against aggressive outsiders..

                              The difference between chimp tribalism and us is the we have merged many tribes into clans and kingdoms etc. Same principle but on a much larger scale.
