Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

Not as used in the phrase "settled science".

Skeptics often claim that the science of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is not “settled”. But to the extent that this statement is true it is trivial, and to the extent that it is important it is false. No science is ever “settled”; science deals in probabilities, not certainties. When the probability of something approaches 100%, then we can regard the science, colloquially, as “settled”.

      So it is colloquially 'settled.'

Yeah, the probability is only "approaching" 100%.

Evolution by natural selection is one of the best substantiated theories in the history of science. I was referring to deductive arguments in ‘formal logic’ which are purely academic. Unlike science it has no mechanism for verifying its premises.

That's not high enough for Seer to believe it, because he's super-skeptical and carefully nuanced in his beliefs...

...so only believes in things when the probability is approaching 0%, like God and Christianity.

How does the existence of God have a zero probability? Or are you just making stuff up again...

Yet I'm the only one supporting the idea that the laws of logic are absolute, on which all reason depends...

                Seems like semantics to me...

Well how do you confirm anything scientifically if the laws of logic are not absolute? If the LONC is not absolute then in principle the theory of evolution could be both true and false.

Semantics are important. Otherwise, people will tend to conflate "approximately 100%" with "exactly 100%".

Yes they are - so they should not use the term settled. That sounds like certainty.

Unlike Logic, scientific theories are verified and substantiated via scientific methodology. A problem is identified, relevant data is gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from this data, and the hypothesis is then empirically tested and verified or falsified.

Conversely, the laws of logic are based upon axioms, i.e., maxims or rules that are universally agreed upon but which do not exist in their own right.

I'm sorry if it's confusing, but in the context of science, it just means close enough to certain that there's no serious question about it.

How can anything be verified or substantiated if the LONC is not absolute? Water boils at around 212 degrees, water does not boil at around 212 degrees. If the laws of logic are not universal then in theory true contradictions can exist - all science fails, as does all reason.

The boiling-point of water can be empirically tested and verified regardless of the personal opinions about it. Conversely, the Laws of Logic are only absolute for as long as the maxims upon which they are based are universally agreed upon.

A = A will always be true because it's a tautology. The LNC flows form that tautology. The LEM is admittedly iffy.
