Theology 201 Guidelines

This is the forum to discuss the spectrum of views within Christianity on God's foreknowledge and election such as Calvinism, Arminianism, Molinism, Open Theism, Process Theism, Restrictivism, and Inclusivism, Christian Universalism and what these all are about anyway. Who is saved and when is/was their salvation certain? How does God exercise His sovereignty and how powerful is He? Is God timeless and immutable? Does a triune God help better understand God's love for mankind?

While this area is for the discussion of these doctrines within historic Christianity, all theists interested in discussing these areas within the presuppositions of and respect for the Christian framework are welcome to participate here. This is not the area for debate between nontheists and theists, additionally, there may be some topics that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream evangelical doctrine that may be more appropriately placed within Comparative Religions 101 Nontheists seeking only theistic participation only in a manner that does not seek to undermine the faith of others are also welcome - but we ask that Moderator approval be obtained beforehand.

Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 or General Theistics 101 forum without such restrictions. Theists who wish to discuss these issues outside the parameters of orthodox Christian doctrine are invited to Unorthodox Theology 201.

  • What is the Kingdom of God?

    The Kingdom of God is the solution to the problem humanity had, specifically outlined in the problem Abraham had.

    The Problem
    Abraham found himself in a state of futility, a country he was alienated in, and God explained what that lack was. The text says God reaches out to every person, enlightening them about their problem, separation from Himself, indicated by their pointless lives, lives resulting in gains that rusted and perished.

    God created humanity because He loves righteousness, just like a gardener loves to see fruit, and humanity was the way Righteousness was to be grown, present in the material world, on earth, just as it already was present in the spiritual world, heaven. Righteousness is expressed by the choosing of good, and Humanity had the possibility to so express it, the created world having the good and and evil choices and the freedom to choose amongst them.

    The visible indication that humanity was being righteous is the subduing of creation, the harnessing of that creation to serve God, and Adam himself was a microcosm of that creation, requiring him to subdue even himself.

    This presents a problem. How is an untamed entity to subdue himself, when the task requires help from God, and God cannot be close to a imperfect person. Only the pure can see God, stand in His presence. Adam must be righteous, free from sin. But Adam in his created state is like all creatures, serving self, and suspicious of other entities, both traits required for existence.

    Adam is like an animal, in fact like a human baby. Always in need, hungry, but always worried when in the presence of other people. The only person babies are comfortable with are their mothers. In the presence of the latter, they are in the perfect situation to be trusting and be nurtured, make progress.

    However, babies must not become able to differentiate comprehensively between good and evil prematurely, become wise to the ways of the world too early. It separates, alienates from the support system required to grow, even makes the Parent someone to be cautious about, obviously a non-beneficial situation in every aspect. So Adam must obey the rule, must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It is a warning, not a law, because laws require ability to differentiate good from evil, but not warnings. Don't touch the oven, it hurts. Don't play in traffic, you can land up in hospital or worse. Don't eat of that fruit, it separates you from that which makes you grow.

    Adam disobeyed, and he and his descendants are stuck with a noble mind, ability to appreciate good, but with a body that has not grown into obedience. The Jewish sages teach that had Adam waited till Shabbat, reaching his destination, desired result, rest, God would have allowed him to get the faculty of differentiating between good and evil. Adam had disrupted the plan, the system where he was immune from the force of the law by being mentally incompetent, not knowing good from evil, like minors and mentally challenged people are exempt from the force of the penal code, the arrangement where he was pure, because where law is absent, there is no transgression, and that innocent state allowed Adam to be in union with God.

    The Solution
    Now Christ, with the status of Adam, the ability to represent humanity through His anointing, has created another state where humanity can again be in union with God, to be a blessing to Creation, seen in the world being subdued.

    Just as mental incompetence shielded Adam from being declared sinful by the law, and allowed union with God through righteousness, the absence of law in the Kingdom also protects believers from being declared sinful, and allows re-union with God. This Christ did by putting to death the Law Keeper of the Kingdom. Adam lost the Garden, Abraham and the heroes of Heb 11 were promised a Land, where signs that subdued creation could be performed, milk and honey, but Christ made rooms in God's mansion that was better than what was promised to them, places at the Wedding Feast:

    We may return to the same conclusion that we reached before: the sacrifice of animals is inadequate to achieve final cleansing, nor can it cleanse anything more than the copies of heavenly things. Then who will bring the definitive sacrifice? A man must do it. A similar point is made indirectly in Num. 35:33-34: “Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.” When a man had shed blood, the man must die. But there is one exception, when the blood of the death of the high priest releases a manslaughterer to return home (Num. 35:25-28). The blood of the high priest has special value. In agreement with this principle, Zech. 3 uses all the symbolism of a defiled human high priest Joshua and then speaks mysteriously of the Branch in connection with which “I will remove the sin of this land in a single day” (Zech. 3:9).
    Heb 11
    39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, 40since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

    The Kingdom of God is the reality of which the Promised Land was only a type, a shadow, a symbol of. It represented what the promise to Abraham would manifest as in becoming blessings to the world. The Bible says Joshua never led Israel into Rest, the destination, result, that the promise consisted of.

    The plan God made was to create a new humanity, the New Man in Christ, where serving the interests of God, being a blessing to the world, would result in riches that would never perish. Since Christ had not been sent, there was no New Humanity to be part of. So did those who were part of the Old Covenant not saved? The are indications that those who were righteous according to the Law were protected by it, because it was a pedagogos, babysitter, guardian (wrongly translated as tutor- the pedagogos was a slave who babysat the children) until the real parents, Christ and the New Covenant arrived.

    The way the whole thing worked would be if you were in the Kingdom, in Christ, then you would be near God, like Moses was near God, when he hid in the cleft of the Rock. It is important to be near God, because only then would the wind and the waves be in submission to you, so that you could subdue the earth, like Adam could. But to be IN the Rock, enter Rest, you needed to be born again, have a different spirit.

    Numbers 12:24But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

    Once in the Kingdom of God, we become blessings to the world by being able to show that God can give other people the same spirit which will bring them into the Kingdom.

    The Kingdom is entered by changing our mind from thinking we need depend on people or things to live to thinking God can supply all our needs, overcome all the obstacles in our lives:

    Numbers 14:24But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.
