Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

  • Evolution & the Cross

Just a quick thought came to mind and I'm looking for some feedback.

One of the reasons for rejecting evolution within Christendom seems to be the notion that God would not use such an odd/crude mechanism to create. I pondered this and the cross came to my mind. We essentially believe that the God of all that exists - universe/multiverse - sent His Son via the incarnation to live a sinless life culminating in brutal suffering and death upon a cross - which became the mechanism of salvation for all that believe. Is this not likewise an odd/crude mechanism?

    Thoughts?

Who are we to judge how God does things?
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

The cross was likely the most common form of execution at the time Christ lived. I certainly doubt there would have been an electric chair around. Or any other "modern" device.

The Romans crucified thousands of people. They were experts at it. Efficient. And the Jews hated it. Prophecy said that he who died on a tree was cursed. They liked to crush people with rocks instead. God used a device that would have brought the most scorn upon the Lord.

I understand your trying to make a connection between God using evolution to create and the crudeness of the cross. But it isn't really one that would work to change my mind about creation.

If we aren't judging how God does/did things, then why should we question that scripture says He created with a word. It works both ways. And I believe in the scriptural account of creation, and not evolution. And I am not going to debate the issue. I've said my mind, and that's it.

Personally, that was never a reason for me, in fact, I've never heard of that reason, nor do I see it as any valid reason to reject evolution.

I have studied evolution in school and could confidently inform you of its doctrines that have been instilled in me since I was young, but I've never seen the evidence, only heard from some scholars that it's true, and from some scholars who claim that it's a lie, or at best unlikely, for purely scientific reasons. Because of that, I cannot honestly say I believe it for any other reason than because I've been conditioned to believe it, unlike Scripture, which has completely convinced me repeatedly on a multitude of topics, so I choose to submit to it here in this grey area of science when it says God created with words (which seems very in character of Him anyways). I choose to believe in Creationism, and I have to remind myself not to contemplate the environmental factors that could have led to such and such creature, and instead appreciate it as an aspect of God's might and creativity.

I must make an addendum to my post.

Christ did not use any crude methods to create what He did during his ministry.

He did not tell his disciples to go and sow a field of barley, tend it, harvest it, grind it, and make bread from it.

He didn't tell them to get in their boats and fish.

He didn't tell them to plant a vineyard, tend it, harvest the fruit, and make wine.

Instead, by the word of His mouth, He made bread that never came from any plant that grew.

He made fish that never swam.

And he made wine that did not come from grapes.

I have absolutely no problem with believing that the same creative power was used in Genesis to create what we see today.

                Now I am done.

I'm not sure those who are creationists believe in what they do because they find the theory of evolution crude. I just think they're pious Christians, who hold a particular reading of the scriptures above that of what comes out of the natural sciences.

Needless to say I'm a Catholic, and I believe that the history of the world is more or less as has been accounted by science, but that the creation of humans was special and that we all descend from Adam and Eve.

I believe it took much longer than you believe it took, but beyond that I can only agree. 100%
