Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

  • "Boy who came back from heaven" recants his story

Alex Malarkey, the boy who co-authored the book "The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven" is now saying he made it all up and that the bible is sufficient. His mother has been saying this too on her blog for while now.

    Story is here:
    http://pulpitandpen.org/2015/01/13/t...ian-retailers/

    Alex's letter says:

“An Open Letter to Lifeway and Other Sellers, Buyers, and Marketers of Heaven Tourism, by the Boy Who Did Not Come Back From Heaven.”

Please forgive the brevity, but because of my limitations I have to keep this short.

I did not die. I did not go to Heaven.

I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.

It is only through repentance of your sins and a belief in Jesus as the Son of God, who died for your sins (even though he committed none of his own) so that you can be forgiven may you learn of Heaven outside of what is written in the Bible…not by reading a work of man. I want the whole world to know that the Bible is sufficient. Those who market these materials must be called to repent and hold the Bible as enough.

    In Christ,

    Alex Malarkey.”

Heaven Tourism... interesting way to describe it.

It's all part of the Oprah Winfreying of America. Talking to angels, everyone goes to heaven, just being spiritual is enough. It's sad that Christians and especially Christian booksellers (Lifeway) buy into this crap or do it for profit.

From what I can tell, Alex's Dad is still using this as a platform to make money, while Alex and his Mom are doing everything they can to shut it down and have been for a while now. They are being ignored and even blocked from various sites that are selling the book or promoting it.

According to his mom's blog, he's been trying to say that for at least 3.5 years now (and he and his mother get zero money from sales of the book). Somewhere, some Christians are behaving badly.

I am not familiar with this case, but it sounds similar to the book by Pastor Todd Burpo about his son Colton's experience and its effect on their family and congregation, which was made into a movie Heaven is for Real starring Greg Kinnear. For those who have read the book or seen the movie, I am curious what you think about it?

Haven't read and haven't seen. Don't need to in order to know it's baloney.

The problem with the widespread acceptance of this sort of thing is the inability to know the truth because believers are not studying or being taught the truth in scripture. We are to "test the spirits" and if we don't know the truth we can't recognize falsehood.

And sadly, publishers will print almost anything these days, throw in down the Christan bookstore pipeline and it gets sucked up by the undiscerning.

I became very much aware of this issue when someone gave my daughter a copy of "The Shack", and after reading it, she handed it to me and said, "mom, there is something wrong with this book, read it and tell me what you think".

I did, explained to her the problems with it, and suggested she use it as firepit tinder.

Undiscerning believers need to get some discernment!

23 minutes in Hell is another with the whole demons torturing humans and stuff. And the author claiming it was too horrifying to have made it up or merely dreamed it. And then having a panic attack over a nightmare and thinking it would kill him.

And 90 minutes in Heaven was mostly the writer whining about his hospital stay and angsting over the pain of his recovery.

What was that one from the Mormon lady back in the early 90's?

Don't know. I remember reading one that had a warehouse full of aborted babies. Weird. At least have them be in a orphanage! Not unsupervised in a dirty warehouse! The crazy thing is those "I went to the afterlife" books don't even succeed as good fiction either!
