Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

We are all members of the body, and each member is important. Too many people are looking for a body where they can be "ministered to" rather than to minister.

(And, I would quickly add, there there is often a NEED to be in a Church where you will be ministered TO, it depends on where you are in your walk with Christ)
Wow -- absolutely love this. This is something that is close to my heart and church. Love your wisdom, my brother.

I feel like I'm looking for a church in which I can be intellectually engaged in small-group settings, and can express my beliefs without fear of being ostracized.
It has been so very frustrating to have to filter what I say in Bible studies and discussion groups because my elders are pushing doctrines or dogmas which I outgrew ten years ago.
It's even more frustrating for my wife, whose beliefs have developed outside of a traditional church environment because she wasn't raised in it and can't quote the Bible chapter and verse.
Her faith seems so much more authentic because she wasn't trained from birth in apologetics and debate.

I think overall we're just looking for a community into which we can dive headfirst and really get involved and get connected with people.
As much as we loved the church in which we were married, we were never really able to connect with anyone besides the pastoral staff and the worship team, in part because we're a young married couple without children, and the rest of the church felt geared toward either college students (which we couldn't go with because they were all single and living in the dorms) or married couples with children (especially small group Bible studies, which all seemed to revolve "raising Christian kids").
Just out of curiosity - what part of Oklahoma are you from? I have some great friends in OK - and perhaps they can help you get plugged in?

        We're originally from Oklahoma City.
We have a very deep circle of friends there, between college and my working at the public library for nearly a decade, but none of them attend church regularly, mostly due to being raised in church and feeling disenfranchised once they got out of the Bible-Belt-mold and started building relationships with people of different beliefs or spiritual perspectives.

Since posting this, God has shown me that I need to add this..."If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out.
