Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

    • Doc Brown notes recent SCOTUS ruling is good, but concerning.

It should not have been a narrow 5-4 win. (Unsurprisingly, Roberts joined the dissent-turds.)

Brown also expressed concern over the reasoning of the 'turds, expressed by Kagan. Essentially, their view is that certain gatherings -- in this case religious ones -- can be targeted because not all gatherings are created equal.

I actually agree with Kagan, but reach the opposite conclusion.

As pretty much of a textualist and literalist wrt the Constitution, I find it clear that religious gatherings are to be afforded *more* liberty than "hardware stores and hair salons," in that the latter are in categories not sufficiently important to warrant clear and explicit protection in the very first clause of the First Amendment, or anywhere else in the Constitution.

The "fairness" idea -- that the main argument against restriction of "religious" gatherings is that such gatherings are being treated "unequally" compared to various places of business -- is a fundamental weakness of those arguments.

I came across an interesting criticism from a pro-life organization called Abolish Human Abortion that accused MacArthur of hypocrisy because in the past, he has ordered obeying of laws against protesting near abortion clinics, but seems to be taking a different tack here.

I would say the difference here is that one can still protest abortion within the confines of the law, whereas there is less gray area in a law outright prohibiting church services. Also, attending church is a biblical directive whereas physically protesting abortion clinics is not.

But those laws themselves should be opposed, if not on Biblical grounds, then on patriotic Constitutional grounds. Unless the sidewalks in front of the
clinics are private property, such laws are government infringement on free speech and free assembly.

I don't know the specifics of this case well enough to say. It might even have been one of the groups that physically blocked access to the building. Either way, there is wisdom in choosing hills to die on.

              • California's Newsom ordered to pay $1.35M in settlement with LA-area church over coronavirus restrictions

The settlement amount is to repay the church's attorney costs and fees in the lawsuit brought against Newsom’s administration last summer.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been ordered to pay $1.35 million in a settlement reached earlier this month with a Los Angeles-area church over a lawsuit related to the state's coronavirus restrictions.

Under the terms of the settlement, Newsom’s administration can no longer place pandemic restrictions on houses of worship, according to local newspaper Pasadena Now.

Mat Staver, founder of the Liberty Counsel, which represented the Harvest Rock Church of Pasadena, called Newsom the "worst governor in America" for religious liberty, according to the Washington Examiner.

"The church stayed open [during the lockdown], and the pastor and parishioners were threatened with daily criminal charges that were up to a year in prison," he said.

The settlement amount is to repay the church's attorney costs and fees in the lawsuit brought against Newsom’s administration last summer.

"After nearly a yearlong battle defending our religious freedoms, our lawsuit has reached a permanent settlement in our favor," the Rev. Ché Ahn, founder of the church, said in a statement, according to the Patch. "I am thrilled to see the complete reversal of the last discriminatory restrictions against churches in California."

Newsom ordered non-essential businesses (of which churches were classified) to close in March 2020 in the first-in-the-nation lockdown as the virus began to spread across the state. In May of last year, the state amended the restrictions to allow 25% capacity in churches as long as it didn’t exceed 100 people.

The case brought by the church made it to the U.S. Supreme Court in February, according to Pasadena Now. In a 6-3 ruling, the court decided the church could allow 200 worshippers inside but said bans against singing and chanting could remain.

Newsom will likely face a recall election in the fall launched by critics of his coronavirus restrictions.

That article makes it sound like that Newsom will personally have to pay the fine.

Yeah, Fox News reported current polls are something like 57-42 opposed to recall.

he legal battle between John MacArthur and Los Angeles County is set to come to a close next week, with the government poised to pay Grace Community Church 800k in legal fees and compensation for repeatedly taking them to court last summer and seeking to shut them down.

Last year MacArthur and Grace Community Church (CGC) made national news and became the face of the movement of congregations that refused to shut down its services, insisting on having them in person, in their church building, unmasked, in violation of California lockdown laws.

In response to their biblical and principled stand, the County got a court order against GCC, demanding they stop. Instead of submitting to the government’s will, the church deliberately continued to have church services and disregarded an injunction issued against them. The County wanted them to be found in contempt for flouting the injunction, but the church argued that the injunction was granted on the faulty premise of an unconstitutional order, and should have rightly been ignored.

Rather than adjudicate the contempt charges, GCC lawyers argued that MacArthur and GCC were first entitled to a full-blown trial on the merits of their lawsuit challenging Gavin Newsom’s shutdown orders, proposing that “a final determination on the constitutionality of the orders must occur before the County could seek contempt against MacArthur for merely holding church.”

The Judge agreed, allowing GCC to continue meeting while the contempt charges were pursued, which took several months. Before the case could be adjudicated, the Supreme Court ruled that California’s lockdown rules against churches were indeed unconstitutional, effectively ending the ability of the County to come against them.

But MacArthur and GCC did not simply passively defend against the lawsuit when they were first threatened, but also countersued the state and city officials, claiming that their first amendment rights were violated.

They’ve now seen the fruits of their labor.

In a recent letter to supporters of the John MacArthur Charitable Trust, MacArthur called the County’s decision to back down, pay all their legal fees, and drop all charges a “monumental victory for Grace Community Church” and explained that “We know that there is no circumstance that can cause the church to close. The church is not only a building but is the bride of Christ and exists to proclaim the truth.”

Well there's a shocker considering that the courts kept determining what California was doing was illegal.

Paying the legal fees is hardly sufficient. There should be some hefty punitive penalties as well to discourage the government from deciding to ride roughshod over people's rights even after the courts told them to stop.

Agree. And it looks like it doesn’t even quite cover the fees paid.

I don't know about that yet. And he did mention on Sunday that the church will not be getting a penny of any of it, as it will all go the Thomas More society, who supplied the team of lawyers and paid the legal fees. He also indicated that nothing would be certain until tonight when, I guess, the ruling comes down.
