Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

  • Is this a disrespectful way to clean a church building?

So. Long story short, my parents, my husband, and I are the janitors at our parish. We took over this duty last October. We usually only clean the place when everyone else is gone, so it's just us. We normally sweep the seating area with a regular broom and/or a dust mop. My mother is almost always the one whose job this is. Recently, she was not there when the other three of us were cleaning so my dad did it. He has a small, battery powered leaf blower and decided this was an appropriate substitute for the broom. He swept the entire area in about a third of the time it takes my mother to do it, and he claims he was able to get far more dirt than the broom can (my mother disagrees).

He made the mistake of telling her he'd done this. She just proclaimed to him that if you asked a lot of people, 95% of them would say that what he did was disrespectful. So I told her I was going to ask a lot of people.

    So, what do y'all think?

I think it is clever. The only worry I would have is does it blow dust into the air which would defeat the purpose as it would just settle back on the floor and surroundings in a little while.

also I wouldn't worry about "don't get caught" - if it works just tell the preacher, Let him decide if it is "disrespectful" or not.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with using a bit of ingenuity with the resources one has to make a job easier. After all, those resources come from God Himself for the purpose of benefiting those who use them that they may glorify Him through it.

He's already said it's fine as long as it is restricted to the seating area only. I meant, don't get caught by my mother! She's still having fits over the whole thing.

Most of the "dust" is breadcrumbs. And glitter for some reason.

Well if the preacher doesn't think it is disrespectful then your mother should accept his ruling. He is in charge.

Depends on the church, actually; in some, the board is in charge, and the preacher just handles the spiritual stuff.

I don't see any problem with it.

Yeah, it's not like we proposed the idea to the parish council or anything. My dad just kind of snuck the thing in and did it behind my mother's back. I think the priest only just found out yesterday. I don't know who told him. I did hear one other person disapprove, but it was for the reason Sparko brought up; the potential for dust to scatter. That's actually the reason it's been restricted to the seating area and not up front where the altar is.

Well, we are in the process of building our own building. Soon, we won't need the old place anymore.

                              The mangy pirate knows.

Back in 1998 he walked into a gay bar on a dare and he's still pulling glitter out of pockets -- including of clothes he just bought!
