Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    οὐαὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν, ὅτι κατέβη ὁ διάβολος πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἔχων θυμὸν μέγαν, εἰδὼς ὅτι ὀλίγον καιρὸν ἔχει.

    Transliteration (Accordance):
    ouai tēn gēn kai tēn thalassan, hoti katebē ho diabolos pros hymas echōn thymon megan, eidōs hoti oligon kairon echei.

    Translation (NRSV):
    But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!

            πτέρυξ, -υγος, ἡ : eagle.
            πέτηται : subjunctive of πέτομαι fly.

                  Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
                  ὠργίσθη : aorist passive of ὀργίζω rouse to anger ; passive intransitive be angry ; aorist inceptive became, turned angry ; ὀργίζομαι ἐπί (τινι) be angry with (one).
                  ποιῆσαι : aorist infinitive of ποιέω make.
                  πόλεμος : military conflict, war.
                  ποιῆσαι πόλεμον : make war = πολεμέω wage war ; πολεμέω μετά fight against.
                  οἱ λοιποί : the rest.
                  σπέρμα : [i]seed]/i], hence progeny, offspring.
                  τηρούντων : participle of τηρέω keep.
                  μαρτυρία : testimony ; ἐχόντων τὴν μαρτυρίαν Ἰησοῦ holding to their testimony to Jesus ; testimony given by Jesus 6:9, cf Jn 18:37, and concerning Jesus 19:20, 20:4.

                          θηρίον : (wild) beast.
                          ἀναβαῖνον : neuter participle of ἀναβαίνω to be in motion upward, go up, ascend.
                          κέρας, ατος, τό : horn.
                          δέκα = 10.
                          διάδημα : diadem.
                          βλασφημία : language hostile or derogatory to God, blasphemy, impiety ; Hebraism generally blasphemous names.

                              μίαν, one, accusative depending on ἴδον (verse 2)?
                              ἐκ τῶν : of the, for partitive genitive.
                              ἐσφαγμένην : perfect passive participle of σφάζω slaughter ; attack, wound in order to kill ὡς ἐσφαγμένην εἰς θάνατον "as if", i.e appeared to have had a fatal blow.
                              καί : but.
                              πληγή : (< πλήσσω strike) blow, wound.
                              τοῦ θανάτου : fatal.

                                ὀπίσω : with genitive behind : after ; by ἐθαυμάσθη ... ὀπίσω ... must be meant struck with astonishment followed.
