Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    καὶ εἴ τις αὐτοὺς θέλει ἀδικῆσαι

    Transliteration (Accordance):
    καὶ εἴ τις αὐτοὺς θέλει ἀδικῆσαι

    And if anyone wants to harm them

        καὶ εἴ τις θελήσῃ αὐτοὺς ἀδικῆσαι, οὕτως δεῖ αὐτὸν ἀποκτανθῆναι.

        Transliteration (Accordance):
        kai ei tis thelēsȩ̄ autous adikēsai, houtōs dei auton apoktanthēnai.

        Translation (NRSV):
        anyone who wants to harm them must be killed in this manner.

        Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
        θελήσῃ : aorist subjunctive of θέλω to have a desire for something, wish to have, desire, want τὶ something : εἰ with subjunctive for ἐάν.
        οὕτως : referring to what precedes, in this manner.
        δεῖ : to be under necessity of happening, it is necessary, one must, one has to, denoting compulsion of any kind.
        ἀποκτανθῆναι : aorist passive infinitive of ἀποκτείνω kill.

          Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
          οὗτος, αὕτη, τοῦτο : as substantive, the person or thing comparatively near at hand in the discourse material, this, this one (contrast ἐκεῖνος referring to something comparatively farther away).
          ἔχω : have.
          ἐξουσία : authority.
          κλεῖσαι : aorist infinitive of κλείω shut.
          οὐρανός : the portion or portions of the universe generally distinguished from planet earth, heaven.

            so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying
