Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

        Proverbs 1:26a

        Text (BHS):
        ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏גַּם־אֲנִי בְּאֵידְכֶם אֶשְׂחָק

        Transliteration (Accordance):
        gam-ʾᵃnî bᵉʾêdkem ʾeśḥāq

        Translation (Waltke):
I* in turn will laugh when your disaster** happens.***
*The pronoun expresses emphatic self-assertion (IBHS, page 296 §16.3.2e).
**This is preferable to "at your disaster" found in most English versions because "to laugh at" is normally expressed by śāḥaq + lᵉ, ‏ʿal, not bᵉ as here (= "in your disaster").
        ***Literally, "in your disaster."

Glossary & Analysis (meanings in this context):
        גַּם (gam) : in turn.
        אֲנִי (ʾᵃnî) : emphatic personal pronoun 1 c.s. : I.
        אֶשְׂחָק (ʾeśḥāq) : Qal imperfect 1 c.s. of ‏שָׂחַק (śāḥaq) : will laugh.
        בְּאֵידְכֶם (bᵉʾêdkem) : preposition בְּ (bᵉ) + noun אֵיד (ʾêd) + pronominal 2 m.p. suffix : in your disaster.

          Translation (Waltke):

*Delitzsch: ‏פַחְדְּכֶם is not that for which they are in terror, ― for those who are addressed are in the condition of carnal security, ― but that which, in the midst of this, will frighten and alarm them.
