I do remember the "ever watching" the wind direction, humidity, rain chances.... it burned for 28 days over 20,000 acres of TREES, and destroyed over 70 homes. Later that same year, not as close to us, was another wildfire that burned for 37 days, burning over 34,000 acres and destroying 1,600 homes. (I looked it up just to make sure)

This is a picture of the son of a friend of mine who worked the entire Tri-County Wildfire, only taking naps, then going again.

It was amazing to see how the "balls of fire" could just jump from one bunch of treetops, all the way across a highway, and burst into flames on another whole stand of trees. We had been in severe drought for several years prior to that.
Drought will do that every time!

During that time, 251 of our 254 counties were in drought or severe drought condition.

      So, yeah, it's not fun.

Looks like I had bad info on the acreage burned in the Creek fire ... not as much as I thought. But here's a pretty good summary of California's fires I found:

        https://www.fresnobee.com/news/local...245532430.html

It's smokey here in Barstow but nowhere as bad as before. Expected to hang around through Monday then the heat wave is blowing out (love those hot winds...not).

My initial reaction was "fair winds and following seas", but you SURE don't need SEAS rolling across your landscape!

Pic of a fire by Hwy 38...not sure where, but it's making Big Bear, our nearby mountain resort, twitchy.

Yowza --- and, if I read correctly, such smoke towers can actually create their own weather --- and even lightening!

What are the factors in a rain storm making a firestorm go out or get worse?
If it weren't for the Resurrection of Jesus, we'd all be in DEEP TROUBLE!

Rainstorm, none. More water the better. Thunderstorm, lightning/wind create problems.

Not the rain, but the lightening. The rain would be a problem AFTER the fires have burned, leaving no real vegetation to hold the ground together, and... MUDSLIDES!

INVESTIGATORS have determined the cause of the El Dorado fire...

***EL DORADO FIRE - CAUSE DETERMINED***
PER CALFIRE: THE CAUSE OF THE EL DORADO FIRE WAS A SMOKE GENERATING PYROTECHNIC DEVICE USED AT A GENDER REVEAL PARTY.

Barstow this morning at about 8 AM. Sun is high in sky as usual for summer but I don't think the haze will lift much.

Reminds me of Jack Russell and Great White when they played with pyrotechnics in Rhode Island back on February 20, 2003. They brought the house down. Literally.
