  • REAL Butter

When I was a kid, we ONLY had real butter for Easter and Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Otherwise, it was oleomargarine which just seemed nasty.

I determined that, as soon as I was able to make those choices for myself, I would never use that stuff again, and would only buy REAL Butter.

    And real bacon.

Same. We didn't even have butter on holidays. We had margarine, white, that came in a plastic bag. There was a little button on the bag, and when you pushed it dye was released. It was the chore of the kids, i.e., me, to squeeze and squeeze and massage that bag until the colour was evenly distributed throughout the margarine. Then it would be emptied into a bowl and that's how we used it.

There was hard margarine that came in one pound bricks that Mom used for baking.

We use Becel for some things here, but I usually use butter on almost anything that I eat. We bake with it (except some recipes that call for shortening), and that's just how it goes.

I mentioned this somewhere, probably on another website. One day my mom sent me to the store (a small deli) to get oleo. I thought she said Oreos. So I went to the store, got the package of Oreos. The clerk suspected I had the wrong thing, and questioned me about it. I insisted she wanted Oreos. So I paid for it, and had the package half eaten by the time I got home.
      When I Survey....

Well, if she sent you to bed with no supper, you, at that point, didn't need any.

I remember a Christian apologist years ago who used to use that as an example for - I think - the second law of thermodynamics --- that once the color was evenly distributed throughout the margarine, no further amount of squeezing could ever get the color back out of the mixture.

I like real butter too, but generally I use "I can't believe it's not butter" spray. Has a good butter taste and like zero calories.

It's great on corn on the cob and even on popcorn (you have to be sparing with it, or it will make the popcorn soggy)

While convenient those sprays tend to make butter (or fake butter) rather pricey.

I know that butter and margarine have functional differences, but for some reason to me they both taste the same.

I know from working in my grocery store's dairy section a lot that it comes spreadable as well, though I've never tried it. Popular stuff, though.

Maybe we'll have to try it. Is it less expensive than Becel?

Only fitting given that I've been replacing your bacon with soy bacon for the last seven months.
