Interestingly, I once heard that Engrish is okay but Chinglish is racist.

            • On Christmas, my in-laws were watching the movie A Christmas Story. At the end, a group of Chinese are trying to sing "Deck The Halls" without mixing their "L"s and "R"s. I thought "This movie needs to be banned! It is making fun of Chinese and hurting their feelings!"

Not really. I actually thought "This would not be included in a movie made today."

The irony is that it is the Japanese and not the Chinese who have problems with "L"s

Back in WWII they issued the G.I.s fighting in Asia a comic book teaching them how to distinguish between those evil "Japs" and the friendly Chinese. One piece of advice was to make them say "Lallapaloosa." It even describe Japanese saying it as a "laugh riot."

I hadn't heard that before. Interesting.

I was just thinking, it's too bad abbreviations have negative connotations when it comes to ethnicity. Jap instead of Japanese, Chink (or Chin) instead of Chinese, Kraut instead of German, Yank instead of American ... they would all make language simpler. Instead, the Language Police have us hyphenating everyone. Like, I am a "Native-American-Of-Mixed-European-Descent-Who-Might-Commonly-Be-Called-A-Caucasion" (though my ancestors are not from the Caucus region).

I call myself an American Euromutt. My ancestors came from northwestern Europe (Germany, Scandinavian[1] and British islands)

                    1. a poster (name started with a P) once said I put the "knave" in to Scandinavian and I wear that as a badge of honor
