  • Happy St. Patty's Day!

    I'll be wearing the green!

    Source: Wiki

Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick") is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated annually on 17 March, the death date of the most commonly-recognised patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461).

Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early seventeenth century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland),[4] the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland,[3] as well as celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.[5] Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.[6] Christians also attend church services,[5][7] and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.[5][6][8][9]

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland,[10] Northern Ireland,[11] Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world; especially in Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

    As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.
    May Christ shield me today.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
    Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
    Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,
    Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

      The longer version:
      I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
      Through belief in the Threeness,
      Through confession of the Oneness
      of the Creator of creation.

      I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion with His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection with His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

      I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
      In the obedience of angels,
      In the service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
      In the prayers of patriarchs,
      In the predictions of prophets,
      In the preaching of apostles,
      In the faith of confessors,
In the innocence of holy virgins,
In the deeds of righteous men.

      I arise today, through
      The strength of heaven,
      The light of the sun,
      The radiance of the moon,
      The splendor of fire,
      The speed of lightning,
      The swiftness of wind,
      The depth of the sea,
      The stability of the earth,
      The firmness of rock.

      I arise today, through
      God's strength to pilot me,
      God's might to uphold me,
      God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
      God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
      God's hand to guard me,
      God's shield to protect me,
      God's host to save me
      From snares of devils,
      From temptation of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
      afar and near.

      I summon today
All these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel and merciless power
that may oppose my body and soul,
      Against incantations of false prophets,
      Against black laws of pagandom,
      Against false laws of heretics,
      Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
      Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul;
      Christ to shield me today
      Against poison, against burning,
      Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me an abundance of reward.

      Christ with me,
      Christ before me,
      Christ behind me,
      Christ in me,
      Christ beneath me,
      Christ above me,
      Christ on my right,
      Christ on my left,
      Christ when I lie down,
      Christ when I sit down,
      Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Are you Irish? You don't drink green beer, do you? Do you like the prayer of St Patrick I posted above?

              Happy St Patrick's Day!
              Same to ya!

              Are you Irish?
Scot-Irish, indeed. And I'm wearing my green shirt, and the necktie made from my clan colors.

You don't drink green beer, do you?
I stopped drinking beer when I was of legal age to start.

Do you like the prayer of St Patrick I posted above?
I really DO! I don't know why, but I never really took time to look at the actual SAINT Patrick. That was worth starting the thread!

I really do too. I remember once on the old TWeb some fundy was going on and on about how I'm not saved and was going to hell because of something or other I said. Trying to make peace, I quoted the prayer of St Patrick. Well, he thought I had written the prayer and tore into it as the worst thing he'd ever heard and it showed how self-centered I was that I thought Christ was about me, etc. When I told him it was a catholic prayer attributed to St Patrick and that I had not written it, that just made things worse, believe it or not. I just laughed and laughed because I love that prayer and nobody was going to make me sad that day, 'cause Christ is all around us.

It's more of an actual religious holiday there than it is in North America. Just an excuse to get wasted here, I think.

As if our culture needed another excuse.

I'm pretty certain St. Patrick would disapprove of getting drunk, but I don't think he'd mind a glass of beer or a wee dram o' mountain dew being hoisted in his memory.

Would he accept the lifting of a glass of grape juice in his memory?

Kidding, I'm not able to drink any alcohol, glad I never understood the appeal anyway. Root beer on the other hand is quite good.
