  • Cajon Pass

    http://digital-desert.com/cajon-pass/

If you are in Southern California, and you need to go anywhere, such as to Las Vegas NV, you will travel through the Cajon Pass on the Interstate 15 northbound or southbound. The pic in the link is a great birds eye view of the pass. The description of the roadways is not good - Route 66 is mentioned, but in the Pass that's almost nonexistent. What you're looking at is the 15.

It has changed a lot since I was a boy.
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Thanks. That site had an interesting little description of the pass. I think it would be neat to study more on the california history.

There was a link to the High Desert area. Barstow is shown on the map. But their description of the Mojave being one of the borders of the High Desert leaves me scratching my head - it runs right through Barstow, yet they say it borders the Mojave which is for miles around yet. Maybe I don't understand.

A Cajon pass fan, eh? I love that you're a neighbor of mine. =)

Visiting the Mojave is like going to Mars. Just don some blueblockers and you're on the Red Planet.

A large part of the Mojave Desert (as I understand) in not true High Desert. It is more middle desert

Phfft...I should have made it clear that I was referring to the Mojave RIVER that runs through Barstow and yet in the link they describe the RIVER as being one of the borders of the HIGH DESERT. I'll go back and reread the link later.

And yes, a good part of the Mojave DESERT is middle to low desert. After all it's the home of the Death Valley.

I did my tank training outside of Twentynine Palms - I was surprised how cold the desert actually got at night.

Yep. We infrequently get hard freezes, but it happens. Even funner if there is high wind. Brrrr

The first day we went out, our NCOs told us to take our sleeping bags - it was 85+ degrees, so we didn't, and we froze that night. But the stars! They came right down to the ground and the sky was so clear.

                      Dude...always listen to the NCOs.

And yes, the stars are one reason I stay out here.

I'm a New England boy through and through but I can see the attraction of the desert. I didn't care for the rest of the state, though I didn't get up into the mountains. I think I would have liked the Lake Tahoe area.

You weren't too far from the Big Bear resort area. A four season place especially if the winter cooperates with snow. Just grab the 247 up to the mountains then the 18.

I was there during the hippy movement, I did get to see a lot of varied wildlife in the Haight Ashbury game preserve...

That's now, I believe, the Moonridge Zoo.
