    Bios viruses do exist.

In February 2010 my Windows 98 SE computer went down with what I thought at the time was just a bad hard drive crash.

So attempting to boot form 3 1/2 floppy and each floppy was bad. So I thought. So I booted from one of my Windows 98 SE back up CDs. Ran Sandisk on one of the floppies and the disks checked good. Attempting to format a floppy, it would fail at the verify. Could not read or write using BIOS sector 0. If an exe file was attempted to be executed from the floppy, it would then become unreadable. And nothing would be wrong with the floppy after a reboot from the CD.

And if the MBR is infected, just reading the drive infects the computer. I was going see if I can recover the data off that drive. If after pounding the boot sector, click click click for many minutes each time I turn on the computer. Eventually I just disconnected both hard drives. Cannot boot from the floppy. Only from a CD or DVD. So even after all of that if the MBR is infected, merely attaching the drive to another computer is a bad idea.

Bios viruses have been known since ... 1998 or 1999, I believe. They're not common, but Win98 was one platform they worked on, because it allowed direct hardware access.

Did you try swapping out the HD?

ETA: I read the rest of the thread, and saw that you did. You may still be able to recover the data by placing the drive in a USB bay and hooking it up to a Mac or Linux box.
