  • New TV Trope

I think TV Trope's should add a new trope into their collection: 'Not' Catholicism. You know, whenever you play a fantasy RPG, there's usually a major religious institution in the game that resembles Roman Catholicism down to a tee (Usually the churches are used as a healing shop, or a re-spawn point, or something like that), but since it's a fantasy world full of dragons, and giants, and such, they can't actually call it what it is, so they just put in some, incredibly transparent, changes to cover it up, such as renaming God or the Church as something vague, or not giving you any specifics on what the religion actually entails? It's just 'Not' Catholicism.

For instance, the game Dragon's Dogma (which gave me the idea to write this in the first place) has a major religious institution. The cathedrals/abbeys all strongly resemble Medieval cathedrals/abbeys, there are nuns, and they all dress in the usual garb for such, the priests all dress in the easily recognizable garments, the monks all have Tonsures, but they get around all of this by renaming God 'The Maker', and renaming the Catholic Church just "The Church". It's 'Not' Catholicism.

Wait, they actually 'do' have a trope for it?

As in the Chantry in Dragon Age.

I do know what you are talking about. Unfortunately, since I play a lot of Japanese games, I've mainly seen instances of caricaturing and demonizing the church. With many of the gamers following suit with petty insults and whatnot.

That too, yes. Although, to be fair, they do go into very much detail about that religion. However, the similarities are there as well, especially considering they just throw out the entire trope, and name the Templars, "the Templars".

Yea, like how God seduced a woman away from her rightful husband and had kinda-sorta wink-wink sex with her.

Are you talking in terms of an MMO, or forumns, or...what?

As for that, the generic "Church" is usually depicted as a force for good in western RPGS (I'm the inverse, I play a lot of westerns, and not a lot of Japanese), albeit there are some grey areas, such as with the Chantry in Dragon Age, with the lyrium doses.

Didn't she light herself on fire later? I thought that's where the "Jesus" parallel was.
