  • Effective protesting at clinics

I drove past a Planned Parenthood today and usually, the most they have in the way of protesters is Catholic women who stand and pray. But today, there was someone different, a weird-looking guy wearing a Straight Outta Compton themed novelty T-shirt holding a sign saying "don't be fetus-phobic". That got me thinking. I don't see how that phrase would actually change anybody's mind; it's frankly just as stupid as when people say "gay people are heterophobic", and it's meaningless. But maybe his actual goal was to appear so weird that people would be scared to enter the parking lot to get an abortion (and the clinic had about ten people there ready to escort people into the clinic; they normally don't have those people when you just have the people praying the rosary. I'm not sure if he was yelling at people going in or anything of that nature. I know it's a stereotype that protesters yell things like "whore", but I don't know if that's actually true in any cases).

Is protesting at clinics effective? What messages or presentation (i.e. clothing) works best?

Define effective. What is it you're looking for?

I don't know how things are now. I haven't done it since the late '80s. My lib baby cousin said that she's seen the "whore" and "murderer" kind of thing in more recent times. We did not do that. We offered literature and offered to talk and pray with people, but we did not "attack," even verbally.

That's easy - ultrasounds if you want only one form of intervention. As many different interventions as possible if you want to maximize effectiveness.

What works for one is useless for another. It's incredibly difficult to intervene with only a short window so ultrasounds are best for that. Online counseling is a good option because it reaches a woman while she's thinking about it, not already committed to it. Time is crucial - no one is likely to think you care about them if you only spare a moment to talk.

I read a bit ago ago about a group that live streamed on Facebook for a while and broadcast the appearance of everyone entering the clinic, until the cops finally shut that down because there were minors entering. I'm not sure how effective that kind of thing would be, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it happening elsewhere.

I'm asking specifically in the context of protesting outside clinics, so what you say is useful in general but not relevant here.

There was a hit song in the late 90s that had the line "they called her a killer, they called her a sinner, they called her a whore", so at the least the stereotype was around then (true or not).

                  The pro-abortion crowd[1] loathes ultrasound/sonograms.

Really hard to convince someone that the unborn baby is nothing but a clump of cells (especially as the tech continues to improve) after seeing one.

                  1. the attacks on pregnancy crisis centers and handing out awards for increasing abortions demonstrates they are anything but "pro-choice," they are clearly pro-abortion with abortion as the only choice.

It’s illegal in Canada to protest outside abortion providers. Has been for quite a few years. Mid 90's, I think.

For some reason it’s been stuck into our version of RICO.

Are such protests prohibited outside Pregnancy Crisis Centers as well?

                        Don’t know. Probably not.

Um, you do know that offering free ultrasounds outside clinics is definitely a thing, right? It's also the most effective onsite counseling there is.

Now that I think about it, internet resources can augment onsite counselling as well. QR codes on literature, for example.
