  • Countries are learning it doesn't make economic sense to host the Olympics

    https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/no...192919690.html

Economists have demonstrated that revenues are vastly overestimated, and as a result, only Belarus and China have bid on the 2022 Winter Olympics.

I certainly wouldn't want the Olympics anywhere near me. Eminent domain hell, anyone?

Winter Olympics need to be in a foreign country that has ice -- like Canada or Alaska.

Whenever I hear some muppet suggest that we should look to hosting them I have to fight down the urge to deliver an economic smackdown.

At least one Alaskan don't want 'em.

            Why do the Olympics matter?

Um, why are they so over built? Is it like a requirement thing or just excessive bidding?

As the Olympics are supposed to be the pinnacle of competitive sport, top-class sports facilities are required eg stadiums and swimming pools; all these usually have to be built from scratch and are often underused afterwards. Also when it was seen as a good event to host you had all the bidding to see who was willing to spend most on it.

I will host the olympics in my backyard. Everyone bring their own BBQ and beer.

Each potential venue has to "sweeten the pot" over the already excessive minimum requirements to win the bid. It looks like the winner has to be bad at math.

That was kinda what I figured.

                        Okay.

So, why do they all have to be in the same place, now, I mean?

Because there's the tradition of orgies living together in one village as a symbol of brotherhood!

If it is such a lucrative marketing opportunity, the Olympic committee should be paying the countries to build the stadiums and host them.

Also, why don't they just reuse the olympic settings in countries that have previously hosted the olympics?
